Life On Mars - David Bowie

Anyone else think Life On Mars is one of the greatest songs of all time? To me it's perfection - the lyrics, wonderful melody, beautiful piano, David's terrific vocals, the whole song's dreamlike quality, and it doesn't sound dated at all. Such an amazing, classic song by a genius artist.

I prefer Seann Miley Moore's version of it

I remember Neil McCormick (Telegraph) picking it as his best song of all time but the list was very personal. I like the way the song mixes up the movies and real life in a melodramatic way, it makes the song sound timeless. You could probably write a book about all the references.

It is in my opinion. Mojo magazine complied a list of the top 50 David Bowie songs, where "Life on Mars" came first. I do know that Bowie himself released an album of his favourite songs and again, "Life on Mars" was included.

Has this come about because you are looking forward to his new album, Blackstar in early January, perhaps?

Yes, it's one of my all time fave songs. I'd probably put it in my Desert Island Discs.

Absolutely love it, one of the greatest most poignant songs ever written. Kinda feel like it's a bit misplaced on Hunkydory though, being followed by Kooks which just isn't gonna cut it after Life On Mars, maybe should've been the last track on the album.

I recall Bowie saying on a Parkinson show that he was in contention to write the English lyrics to "My Way" - which was a French song - but they chose Paul Anka's version for Sinatra to record..

So he wrote "Life on Mars" as his personal "My Way", as a way of sticking two fingers up at the publishers

As soon as I hear the first few notes of this I'm in heaven. Fantastic from start to finish. Possibly my fave song of the 70s.

Apparently he also used the same chords (in a different key and with some tweaks). I'm not sure why but this makes me think he is even more of a genius. Amazing song.

Although I liked a few others of his sooner - such as Boys Keep Swinging and Fashion - it has grown on me in the last 15 years or so.

I had to google that, having never heard of him.

Having now heard of him (and heard him), I'm attempting to erase the previous five minutes of my life.

Fantastic song, but he has quite a few others that are almost as good. Very talented artist, who could adapt and change with apparent ease.
