Hey music mad DSer's...is there a band any of you think " why the hype?" ...." why so popular?"
For me it's Coldplay....for me they are ..average at best, the singer.. ( has a distinct voice,...I know its him straight away)...is so average, almost weedy, imo
There's no track that I think...."hmmm...quite good"....they are not my cup of tea at all , I don't know why they are so popular,
NOW...It's NOT a dig at them..i am not saying they are rubbish, just not my thing... there must be something about them to attract big audiences...long may they continue.
I'm interested what others think about their own band dislikes

Any singing duo, trio, quartet, quintet, etc., who call themselves a "band," when they have no other regular musicians. They ain't. At best, they're a "group."
A band has to have some of those "shiny brass things where you blow in the smallest end and wiggle your fingers."

So a rock band aren't a band? The Beatles? Stones? Iron Maiden?

I think you're thinking of a brass band. Or a windband.

Sorry, but the Beatles and Stones were originally called "groups."

it's only in the last few decades that singing groups and those who accompany themselves on guitars, "promoted themselves" and started calling themselves "bands."

Not a band, but for me - Adele. I don't think she's terrible and a few songs are decent (Set Fire To The Rain for example), but find her overrated beyond belief, I genuinely can't see anything 'special' in what she does and find most of her songs dull or worse. I also find her voice quite painful at times even though I'm always hearing people say that she is a brilliant singer!

I agree. Talented lady, seems quite down to earth and all that but....the actual songs are a bit...'meh' and I hear females with better voices in other areas that get nowhere near the recognition they deserve.

Queen. Just don't get the hype.
ChateauMarmont

Coldplay
Take That
Sam Smith

All of them I just don't get the hype, their music is very very much generic to me.

I agree with Adele.

Also Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, the Weekend of that type in general. Dull, dull, dull to me.

I love Coldplay and quite like a bit of Take That, don't get Sam Smith at all though - I'm possibly even more baffled by his huge success than Adele!

I nearly put Mumford & Sons. I liked 'The Cave' but then they seemed to churn out loads of songs that sounded very much like it but not as good, and other songs that were just very, very dull! I think their newer stuff is quite a bit better now they've ditched the whole 'country bumpkin' thing, although they still don't especially stand out to me.

For me, The xx

I just don't get it. I simply find them incredibly boring.

Yep. Every one of their songs annoy the hell out of me for many different reasons. Though if you say you don't like them, people look at you like you've just strangled a puppy

I don't like them much either, but you cannot deny their extreme popularity, which I contend is mainly due to them playing a type of rock that somehow reaches out to many people who wouldn't normally consider themselves rock fans.

I contend that this is also true of Coldplay and Bon Jovi, both of whom I dislike as much as Queen.

Any of this modern depressing whiny "indie rock" nonsense, i,e, Coldplay, Mumford and Sons, etc. etc.
The White Stripes/Anything Jack White related in general
Bring Me The Horizon
Queen (surely one of the most overrated bands of all time)
The Rolling Stones (see above)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (see above again)

And then of course the super obvious boy "bands", none of them evoke any sort of positive reaction from me.

Adele
Sam Smith
Coldplay
Take That
Meghan Trainor
Mumford & Sons
Arctic Monkeys

to name but a few...

I guess I find any bland MOR singer or 'boys with guitars' type bands overrated. I don't 'get' their success.

For me I can listen to any type of music but the latest version of grime is to much for me stuff like Stormzy, Bonkaz, Fetty Wap ( not really grime but close enough), hate it all but the worst is that new female grime artist Trap Queen omfg 'Brush Your Teeth' aaargh!!!!

I didnt mind Wiley, Dizzee and all those guys but now its too annoying!

I know you said bands but there are very few bands I dont like.

Dire Straits - In my opinion one of the most overrated bands ever. Mark Knopfler`s vocals make a coma seem lively,

Adele - Sorry, I don`t get it, sounds like Vic Reeves club singer a lot of the time to me.

U2 - Purely down to Bono. If you put Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot and Bono in a room and gave me a 44 Magnum with 2 bullets in it, I`d shoot Bono twice to make sure he was dead.

Kanye West - Was going to afford him the same fate as Bono, but he only escapes it on the grounds that he isn`t, well, Bono !

Fleetwood Mac

And a host of others.
