What are your thoughts on it? I have listened to it pretty much all my life and absolutely love it. I remember a time when it was underground and never bothered the charts and now its everywhere and getting regular number ones (Sigma, DJ Fresh) Im more into the underground side of it as there is lots of talent bubbling under the surface but I am glad its going a bit commercial now as it gives those who only listen to the top 40 a little taste of what its like and hopefully they will dig deeper and find more out about the music. Its been going just around 20 years now and shows no signs of stopping, its a big force in the music scene and is getting recognized. In my circle of friends its a big deal but seems on some forums like this one it never gets a mention so I am throwing it out there.

Whos a fan of the genre?

If you're looking for music discussion outside the top 40 then this forum is next to useless, I wouldn't waste my time. My advice: try a forum like Drum and Bass Arena. You will find a lot more enthusiastic people to discuss music with.

I'm already a member I'm just seeing if anyone likes the chart dnb stuff and also tunes that are underground. Fresh , Sigma and Etherwood and Netsky are most well known

I like drum n bass, started out listening to Pendulum when Hold Your Colour came out (as did a lot of people) but then quickly discovered other artists like Netsky, Sub-Focus, Concord Dawn, Fresh, Noisia, Danny Byrd, TC, and plenty of others.

Don't really listen to it anymore, are there still any big name producers of it? Rob and Gareth formed Knife Party which are as far away from dnb as you can get (and all the better for it) and as far as I'm concerned Fresh sold out when he re-released Gold Dust.

my dad has a lot of old school dnb albums from Goldie, Roni Size and DJ Rap, the latter is a good artist album, it certainly is much better than Sigma who i loathe

Drum n bass usually just gives me a headache. It's not for me. There's a lot of dnb influenced stuff in the charts like you said (Sigma, DJ Fresh, Chase & Status and Rudimental being the four biggest dnb acts to hit the mainstream in recent years I'd say) and I do enjoy that, but the stuff that does well in the charts is first and foremost pop music. It's not actual drum n bass. When it comes to actual drum n bass, I'm not a fan. It stresses me out more than anything!

One of the first tracks which got me interested in Drum n Bass was Renegade - Terrorist.

Bought 'The Speed Of Sound' by Origin Unknown later and really enjoyed the sound of that. Valley of the Shadows is the most well known track from that album.

Never really got into any specific artists, just bought a few compilation CDs. To be honest, most tracks don't really do much for me but occasionally there are one or two which stand out. In The Grind by Dillinja was an example of this.

Haven't really listened to much in recent years but as SpaceToilets said, there's not much discussion on this forum on anything besides pop music.

Good to see some of you like it whether its the cheesy side or some of the old stuff. I have been listening to it for about 20 years or so I love it all whether its the dark stuff or vocal. Etherwood are another one to watch they are doing wonders with their sound at the moment, I'd strongly recommend the Hospital Records podcasts and if you are still after the old sound try Uncle Dugs on Rinse FM Friday mornings 11am-2pm he plays old dnb, jungle and old skool hardcore from the early 90s.

My early memories was of Goldie's album Timeless which really opened peoples eyes, I loved the chilled side that LTJ Bukem put out it was brilliant. DnB is still as fresh as ever these days its just if you want to look outside the charts and do a bit of researching. Soundcloud is another way of discovering untapped talent.

Twisted Individual has made a comeback, Original Sin is another one to look for some of the old lot are still going Goldie with his Metalheadz label is putting out some stunning tunes at the moment its well worth a look.

DJ Rap is still going strong still DJ's out same with Roni Size and as mentioned above Goldie is putting out some wicked tunes with Metalheadz

Ahh LTJ Bukem - Atlantis what a tune! fond memories listening to his tracks on many rave tapes from Dreamscape and the like.

Origin Unknown are big favourites of mine Valley Of The Shadows is mostly remembered by many also liked The Touch and similar tracks. Dillinja was when DnB was in its infancy really, he did a lot of jungle and after a while started making DnB I love his use of hip hop samples and upfront gnarly basslines and synths a top class producer.

I only recently discovered Spiritual aura which is haunting and brilliant.
Never understood why Learning curve did not take off as Good to be alive was played a lot on the music channels and is a well known tune. My dad had this album and he gave it to me and I love it, she has so much going for her but always remained out of the limelight it seems

She made some old skool hardcore as well in the early 90s before she ventured into jungle then DnB. She is respected by many people and her fan page on Facebook does really well I'd consider giving her a like on there and you'll see where she is DJing etc.

Used to listen to it from way back in the '1 in the Jungle' days, when it evolved into Hardstep I absolutely loved that, but then it got 'popular' (Pendulum was the tripping point I think) I started to lose interest.

I still dabble in it occasionally, got a few Andy C mixes I listen to a lot I love his track selections. I'll stick D&BTV on Youtube on occasion, the Athys & Duster #200 mix was excellent.

I'm in my 40s now but I spent my early 20s going to jungle/drum and bass raves (not exclusively though). Some of my favourites from that time:

Johnny Jungle - Johnny
Omni Trio - Renegade Snares
Dope Skillz - 6 Million Ways
Lennie De-Ice - We Are i.e.
Bodysnatch - Euphony
Sacred - Do It Together

Haven't a clue what's good nowadays, I don't tend to listen to drum and bass much any more.

I have quite a large collection of D&B Records and CDs from the mid 90's (sold the cassettes)..but i never listen to any of it..It's to fast to dance to and i cant keep up.
I couldnt name that many classic songs from that time, but i could easily name all the DJs.

Black Sun Empire - Eraser. One of the best D&B songs I've ever heard. I wouldn't class Sigma in this genre.

DnB is not really one of my favourite genres but I do like a few tracks. I loved that Original Nuttah tune from about 20 years ago…was it Shy FX? But…ok I am gonna look like an old saddo but is the difference between Jungle and DnB because I think am getting a bit confused! Cos when I was at school and Original Nuttah came out, I think we referred to it as 'jungle'.

And I loved Inner City Life (I think that was Goldie). Is that DnB or jungle?

And Sweet Harmony (Liquid)…is that a bit DnB-ish? although when that came out I think we referred to that as 'rave' music.

I know nothing at all about the modern DnB tracks. I am 35 and a bit of a 90s throwback (especially with UK garage, but that's another thread!)

Sorry people I am showing my ignorance here, but I am willing to learn!

Not really, they're interchangeable according to Wikipaedia, although in my own head I consider 'Jungle' to be the earlier, obviously breakbeat, more experimental stuff, and 'Drum&Bass' to be the later more beat and bass heavy four-to-the-floor evolution.

I probably just started a flame war but hey-ho.

Jungle was more about the ragga vocals, ragga basslines (WUB WOB) with sped up hip hop breakbeats. Drum n bass came along and that was focused mainly on the drums (breakbeats) then basslines became more prominent as the music got darker. Jungle tunes were not formulaic in their layout, usually lasted around 4/5 mins long and chopped and changed the sounds every 4 to 8 bars or so. Drum n bass in its early days had huge long intros usually at around a minute before a drop happened and a beat came in. These tunes were designed for DJ's to mix, so the long intro gives them a chance to play that over the other tune underneath of the other deck (are you following? lol) so when the intro stops and the drop comes in the tune on the other deck has finished and the DJ pushes the fader over to the new tune coming in at the drop so it lines up nicely.

Jungle tunes were quite messy in length and usually consisted of a lot of skill in where to remember to cut out one tune and flip it to the next tune before the drop. As for stuff like Sweet Harmony that was hardcore which is now known as old skool hardcore. It was usually slower at around 130 bpm where as jungle and dnb is always at around 155-180 bpm.

Also worth noting that when your in a club and jungle/dnb is playing that the women grind slowly to the wobbly basslines and the guys go mental to the sped up breakbeats

Don't listen to it a lot, but there's some good songs out there, although I tend to listen to more modern tracks

These are a few favourites:

Matrix and Futurebound ft. Baby Blue = Magnetic Eyes

Rusko = Somebody To Love (Sigma Remix)

I've just listened to Bowie's Earthling album, which amply demonstrates how perfectly good songs can be ruined by the drum 'n' bass treatment.
