Do I understand Freeview Play properly

I have a Panasonic CX802 which claims to support FreeView Play. However, when I go to the app, I can't see a way of doing more than regular Freeview. I thought the idea was that you get a Freeview on screen channel guide which allows you to navigate back in time to do catchup e.g. watch the whole of a program that you stumble across that is already half way through.

The first thing to ask is whether you're sure your internet connection to the TV is okay?

If the TV guide won't let you go left as well as right it does sound like the set isn't connected to the internet. If it is then make sure you are on the latest software version. Do this in the Network menu. The guide will only go backwards on ststions that are part of the freeview play group, at the moment it won't work on things like Dave or Yesterday but should in the future.

Isn't it just Youview

No, similar premise but executed slightly differently. Essentially BBC, ITV, C4 etc.. got pissed off with BT/TalkTalk dominating YouView which was initially supposed to be a subscription free platform but got hijacked. They broke away from the YouView group (or formed an additional group) to focus on the free stations only.

Hardly 'hijacked' - the BBC etc. completely buggered Youview by dithering for years about the spec. so it was dead even before it was launched.

If anything BT/Talk Talk 'rescued' YouView

Definitely connected to the internet. All the catch up apps such as iPlayer work fine. In fact that's where the Freeview Play app takes me - to a list of catch up apps.

What if you go to the EPG and scroll backwards in time? Do you see a list of previously broadcast programmes on the main channels at least?

That is the main point of Freeview Play, you simply go back in time on the EPG and click on a programme and the telly goes off and finds it from the appropriate channel's catch-up service for you.

Whether it will let you go back to the start of a programme that is half way through live broadcast is another matter.

It's unlikely, although it depends on the specific channel - on Youview you can view the previous programme (I've never tried the one that's currently playing) on BBC channels, but on ITV the previous programmes aren't available until later on (but I'm not sure when).

I realise what I've been doing wrong. I thought the backwards guide would be just like the forwards guide by just going back along a row, but it's rather odd. You go backwards one position and then the catchup guide is down the column. So if you want to look at a different channel you have to take it back to the current time and then scroll down to the next channel.

Probably the most useful is a quick way of watching the program that is currently live from the beginning
