the title would mean which one of them is queen of soul, Dusty is referred to as White Queen of Soul but I believe she is better than Aretha who is more commonly known as Queen of Soul

Two very good, but different singers, so not really appropriate to compare them.

Aretha is undoubtedly the Queen of Soul.

Dusty is arguably Britain's greatest ever female pop singer.

Dusty for me. She had a fragility to her voice and could convey pain and sorrow in a way that Aretha doesn't really manage.

Aretha was always Aretha.

Dusty started off as part of a trio called "The Springfields," singing pop.

Like this.

She graduated to to singing soul music after she went solo. So she was like some other British artists of her generation who sang American soul music.

I've always liked her. She was probably our best singer of that genre, but you could never call her "Queen of Soul." That will always be Aretha.

Not to take away Dusty's talent but Aretha will always be the Queen of Soul.

For me, Aretha all the way

She blew everyone away with her rendition of Natural Woman at The Kennedy Centre Honours only last week

This is my favourite Aretha tune, I play it more often than any other. I like the way it builds. What a voice!

She is only the greatest of all time for those who believe that "all time" began in the year 2000. In my very humble opinion she she can't hold a candle to Aretha or Dusty.

I agree. They're totally different singers and I don't think they can be compared.

I'm not a lover of female vocals tbh but they're both up there with the best.

I also think Gladys Knight deserves a look in

Absolutely. I'd also argue she's a pop singer not a soul singer

I agree about Gladys Knight and I am tempted to suggest that Tina Turner, Darlene Love or Merry Clayton are just as good singers as Aretha, but if it is a straight fight between Aretha and Dusty, then Aretha is the winner.

Difficult really. Both very different despite being apart of the soul genre.

I suppose I will go for Dusty. I only really like Aretha's obvious well known songs, where as Dusty, I love her best known songs, a few of her albums and many songs that never made her albums. She also has a beautiful tone and emotion to her voice that moves me to tears. I can't say I have ever felt emotionally connected to Aretha, compared to Dusty.

Aretha is basically a great gospel singer, whereas Dusty was a pop singer who sometimes emulated the style of Soul/Motown convincingly. But Aretha, great as she is has always been a one-trick pony. She could never really step outside of gospel, and could be wearing to listen to after a while.

Dusty was a far more versatile singer, evoking different moods in different genres so I much prefer listening to her She could belt it out like Aretha, or sing ballads in a more husky, smoky voice.

You are just winding people up now.

Aretha has done almost every style/genre well. Listen to her early Colombia recordings for example.
