The problem with Doctor Who arcs apart from the obvious, is they are half done. By that i mean most of the series is still alien of the week and then they try and force the arc into that and it just creates a mess. You either go all in on the arc, or you stick to a serial based series.

Me personally i would like it go back to serial based series and the arc is just the characters development through every adventure. And then maybe every 2-3 seasons there is an arc which takes over the majority of the season. Sort of like Trial of a Timelord or Key to Time in the sense that this will essentially be a season long thing. But that doesn't mean there can't be any non connected story in the series.”

Didnt buffy die in the main series?

My opinion on arcs is that they're good if planned out properly and used as a hook to get the audience interested and watching each week. For me part of the problem is that Moffatt excluded us from knowing what the arc was eg. Who Missy was. We waited right to the end of the series to find out at the same time as the Doctor. I would rather have different layers and stages to the arc reveals which would be more interesting. Eg we may not know who Missy is for a few episodes but we find out first and the Doctor still doesn't know so we are hooked into watching when he will find out. This would certainly be more interesting for me.

I think the arcs have been put in to appeal to a modern, international audience, rather than the traditional Doctor Who one. And that is right, in a way, as Doctor Who has always adapted its format to match the times. The seventies Doctor Who was very much a different animal than the sixties one.

Doctor Who would not have been successful under the Classic Who format. It would, in my opinion, have been seen as slow and niche. It is the popularity worldwide that will ensure new shows are made.

Even though I haven't delved into them too much I wonder if the audio Who episodes can serve the traditional fans who prefer the older style storytelling.

I agree to a degree, and i honestly wouldn't call most of the stuff we have seen as arcs. Few repeated words and a finale isn't an arc, well technically it is but it is a lazy one.

O.k... it is 2016 and we still don't have any official information about Series 10, do we? All we know is that it will have Moffat at the helm and Capaldi as The Doctor. We don't have a start date at all, do we?

I am getting really antsy at this point.

Relax, and dont worry.

In the absence of anything official, what we seem to know so far is that filming doesnt even get underway until Spring.

It seems highly unlikely that the new series will air in 2016 - so most people seem to think that the next new Dr Who could well be the 2016 Christmas Special.

In terms of updates - I guess the only thing we will hear is the casting of the new companion before filming starts - and then they might keep back that information until they really have to i.e. when they are filming outside and people spot them.

... so, I'm sure that its going to be a fair few weeks, if not months, before there are any rumblings regarding series 10 either official or not.

Might be fun to have a big Cybermen story. And without them being Missy's lapdogs.

Mondas Cybermen vs Pete's world Cybermen.

Only a Time Lord/Lady would have the ability to control Cybermen like that and get away with it! Only Missy/The Master would actually do it as well!

If they brought back the Mondas Cybermen, do you think they'd give them names again?
I rather liked that - Krang, Gern, Shav, Krail etc.

Sorry noob question but whats the difference between Mondas Cybermen and the one we we've seen in Series 2?

All post 2005 Cybermen that we've seen so far are from a parallel universe in which Cybus Industries created the Cybermen on that universe's version of Earth. In classic Doctor Who Cybermen originated on the planet Mondas in the normal Doctor Who universe.

Not since Nightmare in Silver. A new design appeared there, they're no longer the Cybus ones.

Clearly they are not the same, but the assumption is that they are upgrades and derived from the Cybus Industries Cybermen. I don't think it's been made explicit, but that's always been my assumption at least.

OTOH, IIRC, I think there was some comment from the Doctor that Cybermen type beings could, potentially, originate from any organic species that tries to improve itself by that technological means.

Neil Gaiman would agree with you there, as that's what he believes. It seems plausible that once the Cybus Cybermen migrated to this universe they sort of merged with the Mondasian/Telosian Cybermen to become one.

Yes, it's also possible that both types had already met and "merged" by the time of Nightmare in Silver.

OTOH, seeing both face off against each other could be fun! And, what with time travel an' all, we may yet see that event.

Bear in mind that the Cybus Cybermen were last seen in Victorian London, a century before Earth's first contact with the Mondas/Telos Cybermen. I wonder if the Cyber King ended up somewhere near Mondas?
