Just to emphasise the previous highest score by a Test Team that went on to lose the match was 586 by Australia against England in 1894. Some record to beat!!
![]() England scored 551 and lost 3 years later. if it does happen wouldn't surprise me, pitch is very similar to Adelaide. Loads of bounce/pace so you think wickets will fall in heaps or you can take wickets, but at the same time been great for scoring runs. Also so weird how the pitch goes from being flat when the batsman are scoring runs, minefield when bowlers taking wickets. |

still 44 overs left in the day , will lose 2 for the change of innings if england get bowled out
good comment above about the possible parallel to the first test in UAE recently one possible difference , i am not sure if we have had bad light on any of the previous days so no threshold has been set for when they would stop. might mean the umpires would be more likely to stay on if a result was looking possible. it is looking a bit murky around table mountain atm tho. |

Cook can risk a fine/ overrate ban if he got a warning before.
isn't the light a massive issue in SA just like it is in the Sub C one reason they start 30 mins in the morning rather in the evening. from knowledge it get dark very quickly in SA. |

At work so not watching but catching bits of TMS
Just mentioned that Moeen and Bairstow batted at 2 and 5 in the UAE and are 7 and 8 today Good to have strong batting so deep in the order If these 2 make tea, that should be game safe . |

was that a timeless test if it is then 556 is the record set by Australia against india in 2003.

AB is an interim captain, can't see him doing it for long especially if external forces come into play.
Amla was fine captaining before but soon as political pressure started again in 2015, his job went difficult and he was no Smith that can fight political pressures and perform/win games. Lets not forget Ab threatened to walk out in the Semi final of the world cup because they forced a half fit philander to play the game because of the colour of his skin. That caused lots of disagreements in the south African team which explain a lot of their performances last year. Think AB will have these 2 test matches and then see how SA cricket moves in the future, if he still forced to have 4 coloured players he might quit the captaincy as well. Although it would depends on the quality of the colours, the teams not against the quota system, just that it restricts them on selection. |

Amla was actually quite good in Sri lanka.
He lost the plot when he was dealing with other issues. |

I can see that the quota system can be awkward and divisive but it's only there because of South Africa's horrendous history of racism and the system as it is now will still be much more favourable to young white players coming through than young black players. They have to be seen to be trying to encourage a broader mix of players in their team.

they believe that the best teams should be selected and if black players are good enough they be picked. Politicians might not understand this but the teams wants to win and so does the fans. this is not the 1995 where blacks didn't support the teams because the team is full of whites. The issues players have is that quota restricts selections, mooda had a good article on it. Before this test match quota and bad forms meant Captain never had the team he wanted on the field. Bavuma, Duminy, Rabada, Piedt,Amla 4 of these had to play. Du plesis, Van Zyl + Steyn all injured. Cook, De kock all were pushing for a spot but couldn't be in the team because Duminy/bavuma can't be dropped and Du plesis was never really gonna get dropped. The good news for SA was that bavuma scored runs and he looked quality. other reason the players don't like it is that it put's huge pressure on Bavuma and coloured player, they unfairly get called quota picks. Philander by reports want's to quit now because he hates being a quota pick and the world cup hurt him a lot. He looking at a kolpack deal if you believe rumers. that one thing politician don't understand is that players want to play by merits, quotas don't really help in the national level, fine in domestic cricket and grass roots. |

That was a bit closer than looked likely at lunch on Day 2
In hindsight, I think it showed some of our improvements in that we may once have lost this on the final day but battled through today Surprised Amla has gone when the series is still alive but probably the right thing to do as he doesn't seem comfortable in the position especially with all the pundits picking holes in his decisions |

^Not a lot on the radar overall, but lots of small patches dotted around. Maybe occasional short interruptions once it gets going.

can never understand why in this situation common sense doesn't kick in and they agree to play an ODI
even if the teams dont have the personnel you would expect in ODIs from both these teams at least it would have more meaning than this |

it funny sometime reading some of the reports from cricket pundits
i get why armchair warriors like us on internet forums are knee jerk , it kinda goes with the territory but its incredible how many professional journalists are the same these days, maybe just do it in a more eloquent and long-winded fashion a week ago everyone was writing SA off, predicting a 4-0 series win for england and the demise of SA from their glory years after a draw on a road at newlands all of a sudden they are a real challenge again and still in with a shout of winning the series with 2 games to play |

It's all getting very messy with Chris Gayle down under....
He's been accused of exposing himself which he strongly denies and now the lawyers are involved Chris Gayle's management have retained the services of a "leading Australian media lawyer" with the intention of "immediately" launching defamation action against Fairfax Media over allegations that he indecently exposed himself to a woman in Sydney during the World Cup last year. http://www.espncricinfo.com/big-bash...ry/959051.html |
