Root does well not to over-balance and survives a close stumping chance

Thought he was a gonna from his initial reaction

the sri lankans wouldn't want to stand still too long in the cold
We have a wind free test match so the likely problem might be oveheating when running after Roots 100+.

Vince went for 35. He'll be disappointed but I'm sure he'll be given time.

Important that these 2 get through the final hour against the new ball if we want to post an imposing total

One of the positives in having Moeen down the order in that he has experience at facing the new ball

Moving up 1 in the order doesn't seem to have affected Bairstow

Playing with lots of confidence

Bairstow gone for 48. Another relative disappointment.

You can tell England have had a decent day, all the doom and gloom merchants have stayed away from this thread.

I think England will be relatively happy with the score at close of play

Big opportunity in the morning to score quickly and try to get to 400+

310/6 at stumps

Sri Lanka will be relieved that theyve kept England under control for most of the day. Still 310-6 is not a score to be sniffed at and promises much for us as we go into day 2.

Not the most exciting day's play. England are in a pretty good position. Sri Lanka did OK, better than the predictions of folk who totally wrote them off, they took some excellent catches.

they still need to bat, their strong suit is their bowling and in particular pace bowling and that says something when you think sri lanka pace bowling is the best thing about their team.

SL have lost a couple of bowlers and still bowled pretty well today. Batting? We'll see. I wouldn't be putting any money on them getting a big score but I suppose you just never know....

cook out still 5 runs short of the 10,000 mark

want to bet if the situation arises that we can enforce the follow-on he will bat this time to get it over and done with
His priority should be to win the game

One of the positives in having Moeen down the order in that he has experience at facing the new ball
He's hardly Mr Reliable though

A good solid days play yesterday but Root is beginning to worry me - his failure to turn half centuries into centuries is becoming a problem - a problem of course that many players would love to have - if they averaged 54.46!

I think that Jimmy and Stuart are going to cause absolute mayhem again when we are finally bowled out.
