Imagine how dangerous Yasir would be in old trafford and Oval.
the seam bowlers would bowl better as well.
should be a cracking series.

If Vince fails in the next innings he should be the one to make way for Stokes. Move Bairstow to 4, Stokes at 5 and Ballance at 6. But I do like Vince, he is a good player.”

I understand your sentiment but how would you deal with Finn where, as a lot of the ex-players have said, there is clearly something wrong. This is not a form or luck issue with him.

I seem to remember reading that Ballance was in for just this test and will step down if Stokes is fit for the Second Test. I would imagine Stokes and Anderson will replace Finn and Ballance.

ballance average is due to a very good start tho darren, he was quite rightly dropped and didn't really do much to justify a recall imo

i quite like vince as well but someone is going to have to stand aside to let stokes back, not sure dropping a batsman for stokes is the right move tho given it was woakes who replaced him to begin with

Actually likely both batsman stay in with Ball dropped for Anderson and Finn for Stokes.
Ali back at number 8 or dropped for Rashid.

yeah, just posted at same time as you really saying that i am not sure dropping a batsman for stokes is the right move, we will end up with just 4 specialist batsmen

Ballance did nothing to warrant a recall. I actually think he was discarded a bit quickly at the time given that he'd done well up until the couple of tests before he was dropped, but his form since then hasn't justified selection.

Vince has the unfortunate habit of looking good while he's at the crease but getting out cheaply.

Sky just had an interesting stat where the over rate has declined every decade since the 1920's.

It was 21 in the 1920s but they said that in this match it is down to 13.

They were wondering how to tackle it.

put bowlers on the clock between deliveries, if they take longer than say 30 seconds, a run gets added as an extra, if the batters are delaying things a run gets taken off their score

fines haven't seemed to work, so need to do something different

I agree with the sentiment, but what happens when it's the end of a test match, with 2 runs needed off the final ball, and they want to take time to get the field right?

I think the umpires need red and yellow cards, used perhaps more like in rugby than football, with a timed sin-bin, and in extreme cases, the ability to send someone off for a whole innings/match, say. I imagine these being used sparingly, but with some of the on-field behaviour and with the over-rates, maybe that's an option?

I suppose it makes a bit more sense for a non-newbie to come in to fill a gap that will close very quickly. That said, I'd personally still rather see a newbie who deserved the chance rather than someone experienced who has done nothing to impress recently.

Collectively shitting the bed against a decent spinner doesn't help.

Wow Sky must be desperate to speak to Yasir Shah.
they normally just pick the pakistani players that can speak English the same goes with Bangladeshi or Sri Lankan players.

Very good umpiring. On some days none of those decisions are given
Funnily enough, the one not given out, resulting in a sour tasting sour umpires call, was the one most visually a dead cert out.

What's the weather forecast like by the way ? Our potential hammering of Surrey got ruined by the weather so may be some rain in the area

Had a terrific day

A few things I noticed

Wahab Riaz is noticebly the quickest bowler to the naked eye

How slowly the players walk off when they are out

How about a quarter of the spectators think that the lunch interval lasts 90 minutes and the tea interval 60 minutes !

Yasir Shah seems a really fun guy. Laughing and joking with team mates in the warm up and in the field as well.

And yet you think Buttler should be recalled.

Ballance averaged 66.20 in the West Indies last year, whilst Buttler averaged 55.00. Both looked pretty good heading into the home summer.

But Ballance was dropped when averaging 24.50 in the Ashes. In the same series Buttler averaged 15.25.

Buttler has not played any red ball cricket since the third test in the U.A.E., a series in which he averaged 8.50.

As much as I would not have picked Ballance for this series, it seems hypocritical to claim he has not justified a recall when Buttler has not even played any country cricket in nearly two years, and no first class cricket since last October.

Chhance of late showers, may be thundery. Warm though.

Note today that young prospect Jimmy Anderson is due to play a four-day game for Lancs starting today (Sat). However he's only playing the first two days, so presumably someone will step in for the last two, and JA's off to prepare for the next Test which I think is at Greater Old Trafford?

If it is, let's just say the outfield, after the concerts and heavy rain, is, er, patchy. Worth a look on the webcam!

I know I'm Lanky and I Would Say This Wouldn't I, but it might be worth having a look at Hameed. Don't think he's 20 yet, and he doesn't score quickly, but boy can he occupy the crease, and could just be the job to let Root, Ballance, Hales etc play round him. One thing, the Bolton Blocker wouldn't be phazed by stepping up a notch.

Very poor from England this morning

More than likely a game winning lead for Pakistan

Broad needs help as hes scared of fast bowling. Finn added to Yasirs overrated bowling reward. At least i'd heard of the others sky mentioned this morning.

buttler has been in amazing form in ODI cricket against international class bowlers, buttler also wasn't dropped because of a serious technical issue but because he had "burned out" after playing as keeper in all three formats for something like 15 months solid

in quite a poor position here with pakistan having a decent sized lead after the first innings and we are going to have to bat last with their leggie giving us all sort of trouble already
