Not so sure about that, especially if we spend a day and a half in the field and are then 3/2

Whether he is currently England's best player is open to discussion

I know it sounds mad, but I think Woakes may have that honour .....
i think woakes has been our best player this summer anyway, i know its a small sample size but he is averaging 44 with the bat and 19.8 with the ball

Maybe. At the moment we are scoring at 3.16 per over . If that carries on , we will be around 250 when the new ball is due towards the end of play

On a separate note, anyone know the regs on claiming the extra half hour tonight from a batting point of view ?
Batting side can ask and it's the umpires discretion to decide whether they think the runs can be got in the extra time.

completely agree, and thats why i also want him to not have to keep as its going to be hard for him to maintain his batting form and keep wicket

his contribution as a batsman is way more important than what he gives us as a keeper so why not let him focus on what he is better at

I meant batting wise.

When Alec Stewart kept wicket for England where did he bat ? Plus Kimar Sangakara didn't do bad coming in at 3 & 4. I've been advocating Buttlers return but it looks a non starter

That's a fair point, but like Mimi, I don't think Bairstow would get in the side on keeping alone

I'd play him as a batsman only and get a proper keeper in

I'd also keep Jos to the limited overs stuff until we win the next World Cup

sangakarra had something like a 26 run difference in his batting average between when he kept and when he played as just as batsman. 66+ as a specialist batsman, 40 as a keeper.

stewart's isn't quite so dramatic but averaged 47 as a specialist bat and just 34 as a keeper

I'm more than happy to come back tomorrow for an England win. It's probably our best chance just keep nurdling with minimum risk and slowly get towards the target.

I'm very impressed with Bairstow here. He's playing the kind of patient innings that would have been unimaginable a year ago.

I think we have the squad of players with home advantage to win the next one

Mind you, I have been visiting the fridge frequently this afternoon......

Good battling partnership for the 7th wicket wearing the bowlers/fielding side down

Like the good old days.....

Woakes survives a review

The Pakistan close fielders seemed very confident as well

The selectors don't like to chop and change. It would be no surprise to see Jimmy and Stokes come back in but that might be it. One way to go would be to leave out Finn and Ball which would be a little bit hard on both of them, for different reasons and you'd need to be confident about Stokes's bowling. Could we make sure it's not a spinner's pitch?

Needed a lot of luck to ride it out but the flip side is the bowlers will start losing belief and thinking it's not going to be there day now. Runs are starting to flow as they get ever more desperate for a wicket.

We'll be favourites with the bookies again in the next 5 minutes.

Cricket is a funny game. I bet if you had asked the Pakistan team if they would take getting England to 191/6 from the start of the fourth innings they would have jumped at it. But right now you get the feeling the belief has been drained from them following that brilliant spell Bairstow and Woakes somehow came through. These two gotta keep going though add another 50 together and we'll win.

Yes. We're favourites now according to the bookies.

Yep big move on that boundary. Evens to 4/5.
