The ideal number 3 is a player who is both good at facing the new ball *and* is able to play shots likes a middle order batsman. That is why Pietersen stayed at 4 but Root is considered as a possible 3.

If it 'aint broke don't fix it - Root should be at five not three.

I expressed a worry about the lad before on this thread - he seems to be getting himself out more and more often.

Cook is just Cook but could do with another ton or two shortly.

As for the rest Bairstow is still doing ok but the headless chicken approach will not win matches when confronted with a quality bowling attack.

I still think we can recover in this series however.

Me, too, but I suspect that a future win may be used again to paper over the cracks that are showing. I maintain that England are struggling to find batsmen who have the ability to cope at Test level, and the best of the County system are being exposed one by one at the moment.

After worries about the outfield after the concerts, it's looking just fine. But leaving just a fortnight between a concert and a Test is cutting it fine, considering our weather.

What's not looking good is the crane and building work next to the pavilion.Hope for the Test it all stops, and maybe that area could be covered up a bit - not the prettiest sight!

Evening standard and daily mail reporting it now, think he said it in the press conference after bresnan made a fuss on twitter.

I thought the celebrations were excellent and showed a togetherness amongst a team athat doesnt take itself too seriously

If you cant celebrate a win at a the home of cricket , then that is a daft idea

Well done Pakistan

I thought I'd look this up, and all I can see is this tweet from Bresnan:

Quote:
“Tim Bresnan ‏@timbresnan 19h19 hours ago
That might bite you boys. Carma (sic) catches up with you eventually. It did with the Sprinkler.”

and

Quote:
““It’s never nice to lose at Lord’s and see the opposition like they were at the end,” Cook said. “We’ll use that as motivation.

“Obviously it’s united them and it shows what a challenge we’ve got in the next game.””

It sounds to me like the press trying to stir something up that just isn't there in the first place. Bresnan's spelling is more of a concern to me

I thought it was a fun celebration.

Those stats are pretty meaningless without further explanation, not just because its only 6 innings, but because those innings were all in the 2013-14 Ashes 5-0 loss in Oz. Root is no longer the player of that tour. In the summer 2013 Ashes he opened all series and got one huge score and not much else at all. So he was moved to No6 for the 2013-14 disastrous Ashes tour. But when Trott went home ill after the 1st test Root was promoted to bat No3 in the 2nd Test. By the 5th Test he'd been dropped where he was out of his depth. He's certainly a far far better player now

So i've no idea how significant a difference it is batting at 3 or 4, id thought not much, but only a Test batsman truly knows. I'd be absolutely amazed if its half though. But if we were to use a ridiculously small sample sizes but comparing identical point in his career/form then Root has just averaged more at No3 in this test (28.5) than at No4 in the just finished Sri Lanka series (21.75).

Jimmy, Stokes and Rashid back in the squad:

England squad
Alastair Cook (capt), Alex Hales, Joe Root, James Vince, Gary Ballance, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Steven Finn, Jake Ball

I reckon all 3 of them will make the starting X1

Always been the way with England, remember during the 80s and 90s when batting collapses would mean constant bowling changes, how many times was DeFreitas dropped and recalled, same with Malcolm, Small, Caddick et cetera et cetera.

Mind you it's slightly exaggerated here as Stokes and Jimmeh just had to prove their fitness really.

As above, it's been the England way for years.

Batsmen not performing? Drop a bowler or two.

Oh I know about Stokes and Jimmy especially Jimmy as he should have played this last test but I'm on about in general its the England way.

Out of those 14 who would you pick I would say in order

Cook (c), Hales, Root, Vince, Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Ali, Broad, Anderson

But think they will pick Rashid instead Ali

Ali has to be dropped for that shot yesterday alone he's also getting carted around my Misbah

Speaking for myself hindsight is a wonderful thing but I could not see the slightest reason for that shot. Moeen was not under any considerable pressure from Yasir and yet he played it.

In my view he had Bairstow there to bat on with and they could reasonably have added another 50.

I think the current squad selected for Manchester is a good one and offers many options. Whether the selectors go with my personal thinking is quite a different matter

Stokes is an obvious improvement to the batting.

I don't think Moeen will be dropped. I'd like to see two spinners but I doubt if it will happen, save in the highly unlikely event that the pitch looks like being a raging Bunsen.

To accommodate two spinners though you would have to drop one of Jimmy, Broad, Woakes or Stokes.

I'm confident we'll win. Lords always seems to inspire our opponents to do well, but we always do so much better at the other venues. 3-1 England series win for me.

I'd go with that side, but probably Rashid for Ali, OT will have a bit of bounce which helps a leg-spinner more, which is a bit worrying facing Yasir. Would prefer a proper fast bowler, but I'm guessing Stokes will play that role in short spells. Oh and Broad should get a lot of bounce too.

Not necessarily you could drop either Ballance or Vince to accommodate the second spinner.

So the team could be
Cook, Hales, Root, Vince or Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Ali, Rashid, Broad, Anderson
