Excellent half-century from Stokes. England 138-5, 183 ahead.

how many times this year have we been saved by a partnership for the 6th or 7th wickets?

When he was first picked he was the obvious choice but England now have an abundance of young players knocking on the door. Bairstow at 4 with Buttler with the gloves is one obvious option.”

My immediate reaction was Ballance to go and Hameed to replace - but Ballance's Test average is in the mid 40's, and the number of games he's played that doesn't lie.

What is his last 10 Test innings, and what is his last 10 first-class knocks? Is he simply out of form, or has he lost confidence, or has he been "found out"? Yorkie fans will know the lad much better than me!
Note - as it's a two-match series it's hardly fair to rest someone after one.

stokes eventually goes for an excellent 85 but that innings and the partnership with bairstow has put us in a good position to win this

242 ahead with 3 wickets left, hopefully we can sneak a few more runs out of the tail and get up to the 275-280 mark i was hoping for at the start of this innings

ballance had a fantastic start and was averaging over 60 for his first 10 tests iirc but during 2015 developed a pretty bad technical problem going too deep in his crease and too far to leg stump, and basically became unselectable

he didn't have a particularly great season with yorks before getting a recall and this is only the 5th test since and he is averaging in the low 20s with just one 50 in those 5 tests

Most of that is thanks to Jonny B I would imagine. Cracking stat

You could have a tremendous betting game over whether Ravi's decisions are correct or not.

How many has he got wrong this test?

ravi's the 3rd umpire i think

its dharmasena who is the onfield umpire thats having a shocker, i think thats 5 decisions he has had overturned now

A record 9 overturned decisions in the match with Dharmasena responsible for 6 of them

Thanks for the info. If the part about the technique is correct, I wonder why a full-time pro can't be coached back to the "right" technique?
Anyhow, if that's his recent run, despite it being a 2-match series, think it's time for a rest.

he has resolved most of the technical issues he had, doesn't mean he will automatically go back to the player that was averaging 60 tho

pleasantly surprised to see us still be batting at CoP today

273 ahead overnight, hoping that will already be enough so anything extra we get in the morning is a bonus

More poor umpiring in Abu Dhabi , this time from Michael Gough

Gives Bravo not out . The review shows it hitting half way up middle

Then next ball gives Samuels out when their was a huge inside edge to the naked eye

Ducket scored 29 and Cook 16.

See the BBC website list officials as I J Gould, R K Illingworth, J J Crowe, P R Reiffel, so maybe Gough was a late replacement ?

Ballance is a worry but I'd be surprised if he was dropped after one Test of this tour.

Wow what a brilliant day for England, the top order really needs to improve though since statically speaking the 6th or 7th partnership will fail at some point.

Thanks to Stokes the crown prince in our team. He did most of the leg work with the bowling and then took the Banglas to task. His performance is an example to the others such as Woakes and also Broad who is now beginning to look out of place.

Without Stokes we would have been shafted some credit goes to Jonny too until he gave his wicket away with a stupid shot to cease a productive partnership.

I'd be tempted to take a sickle to the top order if we lose this match. They have dropped us in the sh*t twice and that is unallowable at this level. They all have reasons for failing but older players like cook and root should not be doing it twice in a game especially cook who is meant to lead by example as well as captain the team.

However if we do scrape in then I'd expect to see the same players in the next test.

what a stupid way to give a wicket away when even another 20-30 runs this morning are so important

so bangladesh need 286 to win

should be too many but we are going to need to improve alot on this before we go to india

Think this may be closer than I hoped

If Bangla get to the 30th over with only 2 wickets down, they would have an excellent chance.

So far in this game, scoring has become decidedly easier as the ball gets softer

wtf are they reviewing there , that looked nowhere near the bat or glove

waste of a review

edit : must have been a tactic to break the batsman's concentration

out next ball

Great catch by Root on the review

Speculating whether it's a lost review on TMS as the umpires conferred before doing the review sign?

Good catch by Ballance as that went sharply
