Think I would agree with Bumble”

I reckon Bumble's XI is the one the management will pick. Personally I'm not keen on Buttler coming in though there would also obviously be a risk in picking young Hameed.

South Africa complete their comeback to beat Australia by 177 runs and go 1-0 up in the three-match series with only 3 frontline bowlers

Outstanding by SA to get the win in there. Even on a 5th day pitch I thought without Steyn it would be very hard for the remaining bowlers.

On a completely random surreal note I dreamt Steyn turned up to bowl for them in a bionic support suit and he did well. Anyway else on here care to share their bizarre cricket related dreams ?

very surprised reading this, i thought cook would hang on to the captaincy as long as possible

if we do get hammered in india over the next 6 weeks or so then if he is already thinking of stepping down that could be the final straw

Cook has confirmed that Hameed will open and Duckett will bat at four. I'm happy with that.

And a long and productive career I hope it is too for HH. On the bright side, if he fails it means we get him more for Mighty Lancashire!

Would help Lancs if we knew how much we'll lose him next season so Piles can get a replacement in. Of course, HH has to bat well this series to carry on his Test career.

Which makes it look a bit crazy that they didn't give Hameed one of the Bangladesh Tests.......

If recent trends are anything to go by, Cook will give up the captaincy after losing at home to South Africa next summer.

Absolutely. On the positive side it gives HH an excuse if he fails - when was his last first class innings, late September? But the most galling thing is the whole team, never mind HH has to play a Test in India without any kind of first-class preparation in India behind them.
Are the powers that be thinking the conditions there and Bangladesh are simil;ar enough?

Pleased to see us going in with Hameed at the top of the order

Hope the lack of / unusual preparation doesn't harm us too much though

Rangana Herath took 5 wickets in the Zimbabwe innings to join Steyn and Murali with fivefers against the other 9 Test nations

Well deserved as he always comes across as one of the good guys

Hameed certainly faces the biggest challenge of his career so far. But if say he is successful here, then it is a very good sign for the future. Opener has been a bad weakness for England since Strauss retired and hopefully Hameed can bed himself in well and form a good linkup with Cook.

Ballance needed to be dropped. Now he and Vince are out of the team hopefully some stability can be returned to batting at 4.

I hope that Cook does carry on as captain, it is too early in my opinion to give the role to Root. Maybe someone such as Jonny Bairstow may be a decent alternative as captain...

I've wondered. Other than Root - as you say may be too early but when Cook goes it could be just right - we've no experienced or natural captains. Anyone for Stokes? Moeen?? Could also do a Brearley and search the counties for a captain!

Hameed is getting a home debut after all, been to Gujarat before, family from Gujarat and brother got married in Gujarat last year.
wonder if his relatives will travel to see him play in Rajkot.

I like the Brearley option. After all we are already carrying deadwood in the batting so may as well make one of the wobblies an experienced skipper.

Time to watch some cricket and try to ignore the madness happening in the news elsewhere.

Makes me feel ancient to see a teenager making his debut as an opener. Good luck to the kid.

I am not happy with the batting lineup.

Ducket should be 3
Root 4
Bairstow 5
Ali 7.

3 dropped catches in the first hour and then Cook given lbw

Should have reviewed as it was missing leg by someway

53/1 with Hameed looking like he could be the solution to our openers spot

Inexperience from Hameed with the review system

Doesn't encourage Cook to review when it would be successful and then reviews a straight one and is out

76/2

Promising start dwindling away

Duckett gone and it's 102/3 at lunch

Root still there though

Opening spreads on England runs were 345-360

Now showing at 331 346

Good toss to win with the pitch expected to break up

Doesnt this show how poor the pitches were in Bangladesh? When the ball turns square within the first hour of a test then the pitch is not of test standard. I know it's the same for both sides but Bangladesh will need to prepare better surfaces in future - the ICC should be all over them.
