Boycs sounded worse for wear day before yesterday.

When that happens he gets more repetitive and slightly out of touch.
Hales ain't got it here, yet neither has Anderson.

Bowling wise, I think we areover gambling the use off all rounders. We now seem to be left with Stones and Broad + spin. Without favourable conditions Anderson now near always gets economy without wickets.

commentators keep talking about SA being a bowler short , we know how that feels with having woakes in the team

SA in a strong position, over 250 ahead with 4 wickets down. Looks like being a tough task for England. The batsmen who have been struggling will get another chance to redeem themselves.

Rain stopped play. Heavy covers on so could be the end of play for the day

381 ahead i would expect SA to declare and england to be batting when play resumes , probably in the morning now

They playing again and SA have set England 382 to win

that could be the last time hales wears an england badge on the front of a white shirt

Ball kept a bit low to be fair but it's hardly Hales's first cheap dismissal.

deep trouble now with cook gone

cracking instinctive catch from morkel to get him

strange one here , compton immediately reviews a caught behind but it looked like a decent edge , surely he must have known he had hit that

18-3 , could be over tonight ...

A tad harsh

If your bat is straight and in the right place you wont get bowled.

When it's common knowledge that the Umpires often just guess, you should only review when you know you are not out.,

Hales' brief Test career is surely over. Taylor's could be too if he has another failure in this innings. I also can't see Woakes playing any more Test cricket.

We may have won the series but only Root, Stokes and Broad have performed well enough throughout the series.

i agree that taylor hasn't done enough to cement his place , 2 differences between him and hales tho imo

hales selection was a bit dubious in the first place whereas taylor had been in the frame for a good couple of years, and taylor has probably shown enough to deserve another series, dont think hales has

Taylor deserves to be in the team for his catching at short leg

That's probably worth a ton at least

Seriously, though, it's a big day tomorrow for Taylor

His place may be under most threat from Bairstow who could play as a batsman and we bring in a proper 'keeper

Proper Keeper ? 15 catches in the last two games

Also now the most dismissals in a 4 Test series

How many would it have been if he could catch...

I hear the experts saying give him time etc, but not for me

Impossible to call , but how many would England now be chasing if all the chances behind the wicket had been taken ?

Maybe a little unfair, but let him become a batsman who can double up as the 2nd keeper when on tour. His batting this series has showed he merits a place in the side

With the Central Contracts, it's not that he's going to get much practice at County level

So no nearer to solving the perennial 'Who opens with Cook?' debate then?
Was never sure Hales was a test opener whereas I thought Lyth did have what it took.

Do we think Compton has done enough to stick around? I like him and he started the series well but he hasn't offered much at all in the last two tests.
He continues to walk a very fine line betwen secure defence and getting hopelessly bogged down.
I think he might need to start next county season well.

For me, Lyth should have gone to SA. I said it after The Ashes and I am sticking with it. Sadly, cricket is getting like football management. A couple of bad performances and you lose your chance. The time scale given to prove yourself is far too short

i agree

lyth had earned his chance through being the standout opener in domestic cricket over a prolonged period and without an obvious alternative banging the door down and demanding selection they should have persevered with him rather than experiment with moeen in the UAE or taking a gamble that hales could ever be successful as an opener in tests

Is Chris Woakes the bastard offspring of Derek Pringle or David Capel? He's like one of the 'never gonna be Bothams' from the 80s. He does have a very neat, old-fashioned haircut though.

Without Finn or Wood as the third seamer, England look bereft.

Seven consecutive tests was enough of a chance. A hell of a lot more that some players had in the 80s and 90s.

Was it ? I totally disagree. Some of the greatest players England have produced took a lot longer than 7 tests to get into their stride. And as pointed out, who is a better option ?

hales is never a test batsman.... Lyth did have a good run, but I think he deserves another go, partly due to lack of alternatives.. Seems an odd thing to say but I wonder if he didn't really fit in with the squad in terms of him it being 'cool' and getting the banter i know that sounds bs, but It's something that crossed my mind based in little evidence.
