Not watching the verdict, but Root got his first baby due in a couple of weeks so I'd be surprised if he is willing to take on England captaincy this year...sounds trite, but I reckon it could influence the decision

So if Cook stands down as captain. And Root decides not to accept the job. Who is the alternative

If Cook stands down, then Root is the best option.

Bob Willis made the point on Sky that if England had another Test series away from home early next year then Cook would almost certainly stand down now, however as we don't play any Tests until next July he's got 6 months off from international cricket to have a think about it, recharge his batteries and be far more likely to carry on.
Whatever happens, it's almost certain that the latest he'll go is after next winter's Ashes. |

Only. Unless you count Broad, who had that brief stint in T20...
The problem is that with central contacts as they are, the players don't play much if any county cricket, and so don't rise up through the ranks, and captain their county. So we are left scrabbling around to see if player x, is a good captain, rather than being able to pick someone with captaincy experience. I don't quite know the answer is, or how to reconcile the two issues, but in the future we will have to do something, as just giving the captaincy to someone and hoping that they will be good at it, to me is not a recipe for success. |

That is what I mean, the options are just not there for anyone other than Root to take over, so what happens if Root doesn't do well, then what, as just because he is a fantastic batsman doesn't automatically mean that he will need a good captain.

Cook has been the weakest England captain I can remember.
He insists on trying not to lose, rather than win. So if for example he had a lead of 300 on second innings going into the last day, he wouldn't declare overnight and give the other side a sniff. No, not Cook, he would bat on till after lunch and a lead of 400 so his side don't have time to bowl the other side out I have been frustrated by his timid tactics for years now, but unfortunately I can see Joe Root going down the same route himself possibly.... |

Ballance is captain of Yorkshire he's still young enough to come back into the England fold and captain the team in 2/3 years time
It should not just go to Root because he is the only candidate for the job, a team should have two or three potential captains, we are lacking in that area, and it is very sad to see. We used to have a great tradition of being able to select from a wide range of options, not now though, it seems to be Root, or welll errrr, just him actually, and to my mind that is just not good enough, it is a failure of the system. |

very poor showing from England
If you making a 'best X1' from the series, would there be any England players in it ? Maybe Stokes, possibly Root and Bairstow ? Vijay Rahul Pujara/Root Kohli Nair Patel/Bairstow Stokes Ashwin Jadeja Shami Yadav |

Why Stokes ? You have ommitted Englands best bowler. 345 runs and 8 wickets from Stokes was probably what was expected but still good for the unhelpful conditions and only Shami from the quicker bowlers took more wickets He was also, curiously, underbowled by Cook I am assuming you are meaning Rashid by your 'England's best bowler' reference in that he took most wickets (for me certainly not England's best bowler) I didn't pick him as , for me, 2 spinners are enough especially when they are the quality of Ashwin and Jadeja, |

How can you say Cook ahead of Vijay when Cook has hardly performed and Vijay has been great as he has scored more runs and has scored two centuries to Alistair Cooks one

Hope we never invite him back to OT
Alviro Petersen, the former South Africa opener, has been banned for two years by CSA after admitting to 13 breaches of the anti-corruption code in relation to the 2015-16 domestic T20 match-fixing scandal. http://www.espncricinfo.com/southafr...y/1073675.html |

Otherwise home advantage is just too great viz India and England; Pakistan in the Gulf , Sri Lanka at home etc. I'd like to see a world Test championship held in Oz and/or SA. Won't happen. |

slightly controversial team that, possibly picked by English selectors?

So the only home advantage will be the weather conditions and crowds. Even things a bit in test cricket. |
