On a more serious note, the closer that Afghanistan can get to SA's total, the less SA's net r/r will improve which would be good for us in a group where net r/r could decide who progresses

looks like afghanistan are going to fall short here , just dont have the depth of batting to sustain the run rate once a couple of wickets fell
gave SA a bit of a scare i would think tho |

What a breath of fresh air Afghanistan have being in the tournament. Ok, they have yet to win a Super 10s game but they show plenty of fight and spirit. Certainly not there to just make up the numbers.

Incredible scenes in Banglore with the crowd chanting we want Gayle.

ideally we want the WI to keep winning so that we just need to win our own games to qualify and not worry about net run rate at all
Reckon Sri Lanka winning is the best chance for England to qualify. Crucial game in the group is now West Indies vs SA, SA win that and it is very likely England lose out on NRR. |

Chris Gayle left the field injured so is unable to open the batting
Doesn't look as if the Windies are missing him though having raced to 29/0 in 3 overs |

Works both ways you either want Sri Lanka to win or West Indies to win all games.

Third Umpires still absolutely clueless about the foreshortening effect of the camera. That was out.

Very happy with how the windies are going. Beat England and then restricted SL to a low score.
Two difficult games and look to be passing the test. |

not really as we still have to play sri lanka whereas we have lost to the WI
if sri lanka beat the WI and we beat sri lanka we end up on the same points as them and it comes down to NRR , if WI win all their games and we win our other 2 we finish second in the group and qualify ![]() I am basing this on WI beat Sri lanka and AFG so 6 points but lose to SA SA beating WI, Sri lanka England beating Sri lanka and Afghanistan in this scenario NRR would come into play and is likely england will lose out. England need Sri lanka to cause an upset or WI win all games. PS if Sri lanka win today only 2 team can get 6 points or 3 teams get 4 teams which is very very unlikely. basically if Sri lanka win it removes the need of NRR for england, WI win NRR is very important. anyway Sri lanka are losing the game. |

Assuming Windies win this then that's the best result for England.......we need the Windies to win all their games then our fate is back in our own hands
we won't have to depend on run rates or other teams doing us favours.......win our two remaining games and we're through |

Issue is I don't see West Indies beating South Africa especially on Nagpur.

the other option is for Sri Lanka to beat South Africa, but Sri lanka look so terrible at the moment hard to see it happening.

the good thing for england was that West indies didn't win well today.
Expected the NRR to increase after dismissing Sri lanka for cheap. had a play with the NRR and it is still in england grasp to get a good run rate. https://www.easycalculation.com/spor...calculator.php WI not winning well today might be crucial next week. England need to hope they bat first so they can make the most out of the NRR since one big win against Afghanistan should be enough. |

Might be better to put them in, hope for a low-ish score and chase the runs down very quickly as Holland did to Ireland last time? That way you should also know just what you need to get past the WI r/r, whereas you don't batting first (??).
However, a win and a win means they can't not qualify regardless of r/r.......I think!! ![]() I think the equivalent is to win by 6 overs to spare which is a tough ask and top of that always a chance of losing the game. The only reason Holland or Mumbai indians have done it is because they have nothing to lose so they go all out for the win in 13-15 overs but is always a risky approach. if you need to make up a huge amount of NRR batting first works best easier to win by 40-60 runs. if you need to make up a small amount of NRR batting second works best since it is easier to win by 1 over spare than winning by 5-10 runs. If they beat Afghanistan really well on Wednesday it is quite possible they take NRR out of the sri lanka game. |

if we win our last 2 games, and i dont think thats by any means a certainty, then it could still come down to NRR if the WI lose to SA as all three teams will have 3 wins out of 4

Or Sri lanka can beat South Africa which would probably knock them out.
