I've constantly whinged about bowlers needing more help...but there's deffo one thing in their favour, those tight diving run-outs when the bat is ever so slightly in the air.
With the naked eye from several meters away, how many umpires would give *out* when the bat passes the line just mm in the air? I would bet none, if there was any doubt the batsmen get it. However TV slo-mo shows the bat raised even if it's already been grounded and that's out. I notice referrals being made, and given out, even though the first glance is he's well in.
Makes me wonder what would happen in a scramble, the fielder dives to break the wicket, the batsman, clearly over the line and safe BUT he jumps in the air over the diving fielder. If the bail's knocked off as the batsman is in the air avoiding him, technically he's out, isn't he? Could be the same if he jumps up to celebrate the winning run too if it's taken to extremes?
Has this ever been brought up on Ask The Umpire?
