I think my suggestion yesterday on twitter and another forum that england declared early was spot on lol.
Quite weird saying this but the longer england batted in the first innings would have given them more time getting 20 wickets lol. Doubt many would get it here, and not bothered to explain it fully now. Although the key point is that if england scored more in the first innings, england wouldn't need to bat in the 3rd innings barring resting bowlers. Basically declaring early cost england 50-70 overs which could have been the difference between a win and a draw. especially when you considering batting should be the toughest on day 4/5. hard to blame cook considering I only saw this yesterday after the event. ![]() ![]()

I picked all 6 Lotto numbers on Sunday
![]() ![]() ![]() Stokes unique innings also means declaration total might have to become higher. If I was a captain I would use this as an example to declare 10-15 overs later. I know it is only a game but in international cricket captain I usually declare around 150 overs think that the right number of overs to guarantee at least a draw and have time to get 20 wickets. England batted only 120 overs which in terms of declaration in the first innings is quite low. |

the problem with that theory is the pitch isn't showing any signs of getting harder to bat on and if you fancy winning the game then you have to back your team that 629 is more than enough
by batting on you are also committing your bowlers to three full days in the field, in very hot conditions, assuming you had the option to enforce the follow-on anyway looking at this game SA already confirmed the draw now and it is only lunch day 4. in batting longer SA would still be scared of losing the game late on day4 and on day 5. only 3 days in the field makes it tricky, although suppose the 700 makes it possible of SA losing more wicket because of scorecard pressure. |

The extra runs would have been handy now.
Sa still only need to bat another 10-20 overs to get the draw or another 30-40 runs. |

A draw is not a problem though. England do not need to win so long as they don't lose. SA are the team that need the win more.
![]() A draw here still gives SA hopes of winning the series 2-1. SA have 2 of the best grounds to get a win as well when their move to the highvield. Think SA will be happy with a draw, they be hoping to beat england in the next two test matches and hope england can't handle the pace and bounce of the Centurian and Johannesburg. |

Looks like Sa are going for the win, no surprise really since the draw a given for them now, only England could lose from here.

Six missed chances in this innings. I think SA would not have got close to 400 if we had taken those first up misses. Our batting recovered after a mediocre position and our bowling created many chances. Whats missing in this game has been top tier test fielding standards by our players.

Why are broad/jimmy bowling Cook.
get Stokes or Hales or any buffet bowlers to speed up the declaration. Why risk an injury to the main bowlers. |

Only 1 winner in this likely draw, and it ain't England.
I imagine SA will declare tomorrow about 30 mins before lunch. |

Zero chance of an SA win surely, might as well keep their feet up in the dressing room ...
SA got 1 percent draw 99 percent. on a day 5 pitch quite possible england collapse for 100-150 score or even less. they have nothing to lose lol, either win or draw and let the likes van Zyl and elgar bowl overs lol. reckon soon as bavuma gets hundred they will declare, the England players should be helping him now, expect to see some declaration bowling now. |
