The Telegraph have published a detailed article on JEH, in which there are quite a few tidbits - not least the fact she got injured deep into the heptathlon 800m in Beijing. News to me, judging by the way she passed BTE on the homestraight.
She remains thrilled by her win in Beijing, although it was not as trouble-free as it seemed. ‘I tore my calf muscle,’ she says. ‘It was during the last 150m [of the 800m], right as I came off the bend into the home straight. I felt something go. After the race I was in a lot of pain and struggled to walk, but it went to the back of my mind because I was in the whole excitement of, “Oh my God, I’ve won.”’
There's also the small matter of an Olympic title to defend...
She is now preparing for perhaps her most difficult challenge: defending her title at the Rio Olympics this summer. Should she make it on to the podium, she would become only the third track and field athlete to retain an Olympic title after giving birth (along with Shirley Strickland de la Hunty, the Australian hurdler, and Françoise Mbango Etone, the French/Cameroonian triple jumper). ‘To win again in Rio would be unbelievable,’ she has said. ‘But it is going to be a really big challenge, even more of a challenge than [last] year.’

I've been blogging for a while since the end of last season but now with 2016 and Rio just months away, I plan to blog a lot more. Starting with a preview for the indoor season. If you have a spare minute, check it out!

Lots to look forward in the coming months!

Regarding the Liliya Shobukhova cover-up - the IAAF Ethics Commission have decreed Papa Massata Diack, Valentin Balakhnichev and Alexei Melnikov are banned for life from the sport; Gabriel Dollé will serve a five-year ban. Click here for the full report.

The WADA Independent Commission will publish the second portion of their findings next Thursday.

On another subject:
IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships TBC"
IAAF World U20 Championships TBC"

[" Hosting rights withdrawn from Russia, so replacement hosts will be announced on 7 January]
The replacement hosts will be Rome (7-8 May) and Bydgoszcz (19-24 July) respectively.

Hopefully this year all the talk will be about good athletics on the track (and field) rather than all the sad allegations that have come out and made a mockery of the sport.

Don't hold your breath. As Edward has pointed out as well as today's IAAF report Part 2 of the WADA report is due out next week. I suspect the will they/won't they regarding Russia competing in Rio will drag on for most of the year as well

The Great Edinburgh Cross Country is happening tomorrow, with BBC One covering the event live at 1300. This also marks the beginning of Mo's Olympic season as he competes on Scottish soil for the first time since 2012.

Emelia Gorecka won't be defending her title in the 6km race.

Full timetable
UKA press release

-----

First 'juvenile' age-group WR of the season goes to Konrad Bukowiecki (POL), who threw 22.48m in Torun to better David Storl's indoor shot put WJR* by 13cm. Incidentally, he has a home crowd to look forward to in 6 months' time!

Ooh, thanks for the reminder, and the good news is I can record this off the TV HD while the Cable HD fills up with Winter Sport.

Garrett Heath wins the senior men's 8km race - finishing 2 seconds ahead of Mo, no less. The American clearly enjoys Holyrood Park as he also won the 4km invitational* in the previous 2 years (and the fields in that race were pretty stacked), so Mo has still started his year pretty well.

Kate Avery wins the senior women's 6km race, with McCormack in second place (third time in succession for the 2013 winner) and Steel in third. Both junior 4km races were won by Brits and GB topped the overall team competition as well - a very good day for the home nation.

[* Unlike the GBR/EUR/USA format of the main races, this was an open race]

Garrett Heath is a good Cross Country runner and seems to love the mud at Holyrood Park. I wouldn't read anything into Mo not winning, his sprint finish was not going to be effective in that mud and he hasn't run Cross Country for a few years.

Well done to Kate Avery on her victory. I also enjoyed watching the Mixed Relay

Very depressing to see so many Scottish runners wearing gloves and earmuffs in these almost tropical conditions. And also enjoyed the discreet moment of bitchiness between Brendan extolling the virtues of St. Seb and Jo Pavey all but calling St. Seb out as a useless timeserver.

Happy New Year all! So UK Athletics has started the year with its 14 point manifesto for clean athletics including that old chestnut, the resetting of all world records. Good luck with that one!!

Speaking of world records, Mo is thinking of having a crack at Daniel Komen's 3,000m iWR (7:24:90) in Glasgow next month. That's a more difficult mark to beat than the 2 mile equivalent he beat (8:04.35) in Birmingham last year.

The most notable result in the Senior/U20 EA Indoor CEC was produced in the men's U20 heptathlon,* in which Sam Talbot (who turns 17 next month) scored 5510 - just 7 points below the world youth best of Frenchman Ludovic Besson. He has also played rugby for the England South West U16s, so it's not known if he'll still be doing athletics in, say, 2 years' time.

[* Unlike the women's pentathlon, it includes lighter implements than the senior version]

I would prefer Mo to target the 3000, 5000 or 10,000m world records outdoors - it's the only thing that's missing from his career.

The provisional women's start list for the London Marathon has been released.

Tigist Tufa (who claimed a shock victory last year) will do battle once more with many of the world's best, including two-time champion Mary Keitany and world champion Mare Dibaba. Five of the entrants have sub-2:20 PBs and Keitany's 2:18:37 AR was run on this course in 2012, but a fast race isn't guaranteed as last year's edition proved.

This event has also been designated as the Olympic trials for UK athletes - the top 2 will automatically qualify for Rio provided they've met the standard of 2:31:00 anytime between 1 January 2015 and the day of the race inclusive. Of the 7 Brits entered, Sonia Samuels and Alyson Dixon have the standard.

-----

JEH will do her first indoor competition in four years as she plans to do the 60mH in Glasgow next month. That means all three of our Olympic champions have signed up for the last leg of the World Indoor Tour.

UKA are sending squads to the Senior and U23/U20 International Indoor Match Combined Events which take place in Reims (30/31 January) and Salamanca (20/21 February) respectively.

The IPC Grand Prix Final will be held in the Olympic Stadium within the second day of the Diamond League meet, not the day after as was the case initially.

UKA have submitted a formal bid to host the 2019 European Indoor Championships in Glasgow. Should the bid be successful, it would be the fourth international championships hosted by the UK in four years (and that doesn't include last year's World Mountain Running Championships).

The report is out:

Pound's 89-page report concluded that corruption within the IAAF "cannot be blamed on a small number of miscreants".

It was also particularly scathing of former IAAF president Lamine Diack, who stood down and was replaced by Coe after 16 years in charge.

It concluded the Senegalese was "responsible for organising and enabling the conspiracy and corruption that took place in the IAAF".

The report also claimed the IAAF Council, which included Coe, "could not have been unaware of the extent of doping in athletics".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/35309759

Even so :

Lord Coe is the right man to lead the crisis-hit IAAF according to the author of a report that claims "corruption was embedded" within the organisation.

Dick Pound (I still childishly giggle at his name) was rather contradictory in the press conference but his support of Coe has probably saved Seb's job (for now anyway).

What a mess this whole sorry saga is

The test for the IAAF will be how they deal with the issue of Russian athletes competing in the Olympics.

I cannot see how Coe can clean the sport up as the report seems to be saying that he, along with the others in the top echelon's of Athletics knew full well the depth of the corruption infesting the sport yet still supported Diack.

Frankly only a complete clean out will do, and that includes Coe.

You just couldn't make this up. With all we have heard, how on earth can Coe remain?
