Having said that Greg will face ultra tough competition in Rio, I'm not so sure now.

A nice read. Hope Gatlin can improve on those 10.7s from last year though. He doesn't want the women beating him!

I generally agree with what you say. The women's sprints look more open than the men's. People talk about a Dafne double but I wonder if Elaine Thompson might be the one to pull it off. Capable of 10.7 & 19.6 and has a good championship mentality.

I think the most British sprinters can hope for are places in the finals. Having said that the men's sprint standards don't look like they'll match those of 2012 giving our men a chance. Women's sprinting looks exceptionally strong at the moment.
Don't think that Thompson can run 19.6, lol! And Dafne beat her by almost a second (on the 200m) earlier this year.

Think that only Bowie has a real chance to do the double, but at the moment it would surprise me if Schippers lost on the 200m (even though she already got beaten this year).

The EA Senior Championships are taking place in Bedford this weekend - the weather conditions are inducing the odd eye-opener, like Mannheim. (To think that two W4x100m squads have gone sub-42 before Rio and neither of them are the big two...!)

Joel Fearon (who might win a global medal in the bobsleigh within 2 years) won the 100m title with a PB of 9.96 (+2.0m/s)! 20 y/o Reece Prescod also ran a PB - 10.04 (+1.5m/s) in the heats!
Bobsleigh training helping his times. Perhaps MLF should make a comeback.

I'm doing a preview for Rio for all the events. If you have some time you can read the first part (focusing on the sprints) here:

https://athleticsappetizer.com/2016/...s-the-sprints/

Enjoy!
A good read! I'm Far more interested in the women's sprints this year, with the exception of the 400m. My thoughts:

In the 100m, I expect Shelly-Ann will show up in the final, so an Olympic 3-peat is still very much of the cards in my books. She's been hampered by a toe injury, but her ability to get it right when it counts is phenomenal, and she has a legitimate claim to be the greatest ever in this event. However, I agree that Thompson looks incredible right now and is very much capable of putting a stop to that. I also agree with Bowie being the best placing American in the final, despite how fantastic Gardner has looked, because Gardner record at major championships isn't stellar. This is, along with the men's 400m, the race I'm most anticipating. It should be incredible.

The 200m should be a fantastic showdown between Schippers, Thompson and Bowie. I can't really call it, but I'd probably go with Schippers by a hair, although it wouldn't surprise me if she was relegated to 3rd. I reckon Thompson is the only woman capable of pulling off the double, but it'll be a very hard task and her chances for gold are probably better in the 100m than in the 200m.

I have no idea about the women's 400m. Miller looks formidable, Felix is a proven champion and Semenya is an unknown entity. My gut is saying Felix will take it.

I expect another Bolt sweep in the 100m & 200m, but both will be very close, hard fought races. His sub-19 ambitions will not be met, but he doesn't need to run remotely that fast to secure his legacy.

The men's 400m, oh man. No idea. My gut says WVN too but any of those 3 could take it. Once again, we'll see all 3 go sub-44, and a new WR is a possibility.

MLF's sulking today, he's lost his club record.

Many thanks to those who read my first part and the kind comments. Also thanks for pointing out the typo on Gatlin. If he pulls up in Rio and runs 10.7, you can say you heard it from me first! I wish he was running 10.7!

My second part is now up and focuses on the middle distances and a lot of very difficult names to spell!

Enjoy!

Just a reminder that applications for tickets for the 2017 World Championships go on sale today.

https://tickets.london2017athletics.com

I've applied for some for the opening weekend of the athletics though I may add some for the Para-athletics later.

Re the women's 800, sadly for my Melly and all the other ladies I see no other outcome than an intersex 1-2-3. Although Wambui was DQ'd from that Monaco race for stepping inside her lane she did run 1:56.x and was significantly ahead of the 4th placer.

Also, re the 1500, Dibaba ran 3:59.8 in Barcelona (with very little competition) shortly after her 5k DNF.

I agree with Jaccobabe that Cichocka could be a factor but only, I think, if it comes down to a last lap burn-up. If it's a longer kick for home from 600 or 800 out as I fully expect, I don't think she's got the speed endurance to keep up with Thomas's 3 predicted medallists (or Seyaum either.)

Just because of her success at championships I'll give Arzamasova a very small chance for a medal...

Javelin thrower Ioánnis Kiriazís threw an impressive 87.14m at the Greek U23 Championships in Larisa.

This counts as the 6th best mark in the world this year and is a national U23 record. However his performance was achieved too late and his previous best of 81.92m wasn't enough to qualify for the Rio Olympics

Thats pretty awesome. Notcied him last year in Eskilstuna

BT Sport showing a programme at the moment called Classic Athletics - i.e. a compilation of the old ITV athletics shows from the late 80s - early 90s, involving most of our great old names back when they were still thin and had full heads of hair. Premier Sports have also got a rotation of highlights from rather more recent Morton Games from Dublin a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for these! I love reading predictions. I'll make my own soon on here. With things like the sprints I can't make predictions until I see how people perform in rounds.
(Also just letting you know that Caterine Ibarguen's name is spelt wrong and so is Vashti Thomas'.)

The programme that they were promoting is on Sky Atlantic tonight if anyone is interested.
Well, it's no great loss to Zola to be honest. Decker was a real b**ch to her for a long time. Not the kind of friend or even passing acquaintance that I'd want.
The programme on Sky Atlantic 'The Fall' was very interesting I thought.

Mary Decker came across as a right cow back in the 80s, and although she seems to have mellowed somewhat now, I still sense a lot of bitterness within her. Her team mate back in her heyday Ruth Wysocki seems to despise her. Not a good word to say at all.

Zola Budd OTOH seems really grounded and nice.

It was a good programme, and the build up to their meeting again inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was well worth the wait.

Most of all though - it was a real stroll down memory lane watching all those races again.

Danielle Williams isn't competing in the hurdles after a poor run at the Jamaican trials.

The Jamaicans have set a deadline of Mon 8th for those who received medical exemptions from their trials to prove their fitness. Bolt has obviously already done so with his London run & Parchment ruled out. Just Jeneve Russell & Elaine Thompson now I think.

Share your thinking regarding the Multis. Jess is my favourite. Neither her or Brianne have any real weaknesses but Jess has more upside for me. Jess has her speed back this year & her throws are back towards 2012 levels. I think she'll score around 6900. I don't think Brianne can score that I suspect 6800 is the upper limit. KJT could score 6900+ but as well as her jumps being at their best she'd need to throw PBs and I think that'll be her downfall in terms of a gold challenge. Even with weak throws her other events could certainly see her on the podium.

The British track and field team aren't going to the opening ceremony. They're staying at the holding camp. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity! Adam Gemili is team captain (via Asha's snapchat).

They did that to them before. I remember Michael Johnson saying the American T&F team has always been allowed to go especially as their events start in the second week.

I can't ever remember our athletes attending the Opening Ceremony. I think Belo Horizonte where the training camp is being held is 1 hour flight to Rio. Why not fly in & fly out?

There are always plenty of athletes from other countries don't know why the blazers think ours are so precious. If it's good enough for Bolt...

Popular choice for Captain.
