Good previews. You'll have to report how well you did with your predictions.

So Semenya is just doing the 800m. Sensible decision to ensure she doesn't spread her effort to thinly or due to concern over the press reaction if she beats 'Golden Girl' Felix?

I wonder if Nike had a word. I know they're her sponsor too but...

Did anyone see the Mo Farah thing last night? A bit of a weird documentary. Most of it seemed to be Mo struggling for form in training.. looking a bit tired and old.. and generally not doing too well. Perhaps they're going for the tactic of trying to lure his rivals into a false sense of security.

And then there was a weird bit where his wife confessed she doesn't know how he keeps performing the way he does and genuinely wants to know how.. and Mo had this unsure look on his face. Weird. Probably staged for the cameras. But yeah.. a weird documentary. I don't think I learnt much at all from it.

I never knew Mo had a twin. Fascinating to see and hear them together in Djibouti.

I thought Mo came across well. Very down to earth. He seemed to drive himself everywhere. No chauffeurs for him. Even driving that battered old car around Addis Ababa.

As far as his training was concerned though - as you say nothing new really.

Just wanted to say i hope you all really enjoy the games and the athletics of course.

I have been pondering how fast can Bolt go?

Low 9.70's?

Hopefully fast enough to beat Gatlin but I think it will be very close in both sprints this time, even the 200m.

Then again it's Bolt so who knows?

I enjoyed the part in Djibouti the most. Must have been so hard for them to be separated all those years.

Yes, that was quite sad.

Kenyan official to be investigated

Anti-doping chiefs will investigate claims a Kenyan athletics official offered to give athletes prior warning of drugs tests in return for £10,000.

The Sunday Times and German broadcaster ARD secretly filmed Major Michael Rotich apparently making the offer.

Insane pace in the 10k led by Alice Aprot Nawowuna ... around WR pace through 3k in 8:52 (about 29:33 pace!!!) Six or seven going with her too, including Molly Huddle.

... Through 5k in 14:48. Huddle dropped, down to 7 at the front. Ayana makes her move to the front and opens a little gap on the rest with Cheruyiot in 2nd. Dibaba being dropped?

Ayana throws in a 2:50 kilometre (28:20 pace)... as you do when you're already close to WR pace. Cheruyiot running a great race in 2nd.

At 8K ... Can't see how Ayana doesn't break the WR here - she still looks great. There's going to be a ton of big PBs even for the big names. Dibaba for example is in 4th only about 20s down.

They shouldn't be in this thread if they aren't watching. A dodgy world record broken by 14 seconds by an Ethiopian who has only ever ran the distance twice. Hmm.....

^ I do believe in 'freaks of nature' - athletes so supreme because a) they have perfect genes and b) they master the technique in a way that the others don't. There's one (or has been one) in many events, athletes who've taken their event to a new level that others eventually catch up with. Watch Ayana and her running form is perfectly efficient. She also has the courage of her conviction to really go for it and, now that she's shown the way, many more might follow into 29:25-29:45 territory in the next 5 or 10 years. I love watching her run and her mid-race surges take me back to the great men's distance races of the mid-70s. The difference is that she never comes back to the rest of the field.

I never believed in the crazy Chinese records because they had no tradition of distance running (and barely a tradition in athletics full stop) and they suddenly came out of nowhere in large numbers. The Ethiopians, however, have a deep tradition so I think I'm going to believe in this WR until we learn otherwise. It's very wearing being suspicious all the time!

Full results of the race here - https://www.iaaf.org/competitions/ol...s/final/result

Some stats ...

Ayana ran the 2nd 5k in 14:30.6!

It was the deepest women's 10,000 of all time. All of the first 13 finishers set a WR, NR or PB (5 NRs including Ayana, with 8 different nationalities in the first 13; Eight NRs in the race altogether.)

Prior to today 30 mins had been broken just 5 times by 5 different athletes, the last time 7 years ago. Today 4 athletes went under 30 mins clocking the 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th fastest times of all-time! Dibaba becomes the first to go sub-30 twice.

Eight athletes inside 30:27 ... London 2012 was fast and deep itself and 8th there was 30:55 and the previous fastest 8th placer ran 30:33 in the 2005 WCh in Helsinki.

The question is now, what will Ayana do in the 5000 in Rio? Will she run 14:05 or something like that?
