A World Hep Best for Nafi Thiam in the HJ - 1.98!

KJT clear at 1.95 ... fails first attempt at 1.98.

Jess got 1.89.

KJT also over at 1.98 ... equals Thiam's new WHB!! New British HJ record for KJT and a PB for Thiam.

Oh lordy ... the bar has been put up to 2.01 ...

... ... but 3 tired attempts by both KJT & Thiam.

After 2 events:
1 KJT 2264
2 Thiam 2252
3 Jess 2242
4 Akela Jones 2217
5 BTE 2151

BTW, if you want to watch any of the sessions uninterrupted by studio chatter or channel changes and/or want to see more of the field events, the Red Button is carrying the world feed commentated by an Australian guy whose name I didn't catch, Rob Walker and, for field events, the pretty awful John Trower. Both Rob Walker & the Australian did a good job though. I imagine that it's this feed that will be available on the iPlayer?

I watch all the BBC 601 to 608 channels as they are completely "Clare Balding and Helen Skelton free."
I only wish the boxing could be "Ronald McIntosh free."

It was an absolute privilege watching that 10K via live recording and managing to avoid the result. Superlative running and yet another dodgy women's record wiped by the Ethopians. I had a look at Gavitar's links to rio T&F stats earlier (great link thks G) and was thinking that on the track, only Caster Blaster has a real chance of getting a WR outside of the relays. Boy was I wrong and I'd love to be that wrong again

I reckon we'll see some more quick times in the 5k men and women and 10k. I suspect the Ethiopians have pushed forward. Could be very tough for Mo.

Listen to the difference in the way these two women (KJT+JEH) sound in interviews. The body language. The way they reflect. One speaks like a champion.

These things make it hard to really root for Kat. "I thought I'd throw around 12m." Really? She's sharing that with us?

I just want her to hold her shoulders back when she walks. Don't hunch over. She's a fantastic athlete and should walk tall and proud.

But she walked like that when she got the British high jump record.... not having a go at you Jimmy, but I do feel Kat is still sufferring from slightly negative public perceptions after her disaster in the long jump last year. Apart from Thiam none of the expected medallists threw to form or even ran as fast as hoped for in the 200. Lets hope for better today (and 2mmrw morning) and fingers crossed for the sandpit.

Merritt vs James in the 400m semis. SAFP vs Schippers in the 100m semis.

As an observation, it seems common sense that with the Heptathlon, you should spend more time on improving your weaker events, rather than on those you like/are good at. As has Jess.
You can't criticise Kat for a lack of physical strength compared to some of the other contestants, but when it's your technique in the shot that has let you down as was explained by Steve Backley, then there's really no excuse.

No surprises in the Women's steeple heats apart from a bad day for Ethiopia - Assefa made it through comfortably but Ayalew didn't (hasn't raced since May; shockingly bad over the water jump every time) and Diro fell losing about 10 seconds and ran the last 3-4 laps with one shoe.

Ruth Jebet looked ridiculously good winning her heat by 6 seconds in 9:12. Lalita Babar of India made another global final (remember her taking out the pace in the Beijing final?) with another NR, 9:19.7, beating her PB by 7 seconds. Lennie Waite was last in her heat, apparently injured for the last few weeks.

Are all the Brits going to be last in their heats this morning?
Bundy-Davies last in her heat too - in the first 150 she got blown away by Felix just outside her and never recovered.

Ohurugou vs Onoura controversy not selecting younger (less than a year) athletes / sending the wrong message to younger athletes? Wish BBC would check their facts.

Not bad from Christine. The hope for a medal is alive.

Diro might still get in the final no?

I don't think it was just about Onoura missing out. I think they really meant old stagers getting selected on their reputation but in mediocre form. But Christine looks in medal challenging form.

She was 4 seconds outside the fastest loser spots and I can't see that any appeal would be successful.

She was innocent in that event that led to her shoe falling off. I'm not sure they can use "common sense" because "obviuosly" she would have made final had this not happened, but some other athletes were also involved, and then you might allow them in final too, if they actually appeal.

I would be surprised if they don't even try, but no idea if succesful or not...

Is Christine really in shape for a medal? Felix and Miller will likely go 49-low and you've got to imagine that they'll pull someone through to 49.6/7 for the bronze. It's a big jump to make from 51-low to 49-high.

Amazing discus final. Very exciting.
