SHe finished in another lane also in Beijing last year and it also happened before. Hmf.
She seemed confused in her interview too. I am suspecting dehydration during a very hot day (even the African steeple-chase winner mentioned how hot it was).

Haha did she? And yet a couple of days ago when the Brits were running heats it was cold and Asha Philip said she was used to it being British.

It makes me so angry that athletes are receiving medals at the beginning or end of sessions when the stadium is empty. The IAAF has no respect for these athletes. How can you set a world record then collect your medal in an empty stadium?

The steeplechasers ran at the height of day whereas the sprinters were running at stupid o'clock.

Absolutely bucketing down in Rio! The Men's PV final has been suspended and the female Discus throwers (in qualifying) are really struggling, many of them throwing into the cage net. ... Update - the Discus has also been suspended.

And, as Rob Walker reminded us, Rudisha usually loses in the rain.

Edit: Even the track events (M 110H heats) have been suspended.

Interesting situation with the men's 100mh. Not sure about giving them a second chance, certainly in the first heat the weather was not that bad.

I was cursing the rain delay earlier for a late night, but what a pole vault it has given us.

Good point.

Must say though, at least they're getting them in the stadium. In Amsterdam they received their medals outside in the car park. Portland was another. Received their medals away from the stadium.

I know many feel that medals ceremonies interfere with the action. I can understand that as well. But I always like to see the medallists being crowned in the stadium where they competed.

....................................

Quite an astonishing win for Thiago Braz da Silva in the men's PV. Wonderful scenes!

Both of today's sessions seem jam-packed.

Looking forward this morning to seeing Team Scotland in action in the 5k heats. Barring any ridiculously hot temperatures (hopefully not at 9.30am local time) Steph will make it to the final. Eilish & Laura have a decent shot at scraping through.

With the first 6 and 6 fastest losers going through, getting into the semis should be straightforward for Grice & O'Hare (a firm of lawyers, perhaps?) in the 1500 heats later in the morning, although Chris's heat looks pretty tough actually.

Then, this evening ... what could be one of the best races of the Games, the women's 1500 Final. Really excited for this one! No one hot favourite and 5 terrific athletes battling for the medals. Maybe a couple more too if Simpson & Rowbury get their act together. If it's slow early on I feel Laura M can't afford to let it come down to a last lap dash. So, if by 600 to go no-one has struck for home she has to take off herself. Also crucial will be not letting any of the other main contenders get a jump on her. At this level even a 5 metre gap can be too tough to make up.

Bad day at the office for Steph. She sprinted away from Eilish at the Trials and in Amsterdam but today there was just nothing in her legs. It's rare that she runs a bad race so it was bad timing for it to happen today. It was kind of her own fault though that she got clipped and lost a bit of ground. When she went to the front she should have kept pushing it on instead of drifting back into the bunch. Well done to Eilish though. She got the job done well.

It seems to be a good runway for TJ. Ibarguen jumped her 2nd longest ever mark the other night.

The only event that has been more than half full is the men's 100m final and even Bolt received his medal to an empty stadium so there isn't much the IAAF can do about it at this stage.

Deja vu for her in the final - her first two attempts thrown into the net. One throw to get it right ...

No fairytale for Fabiana Murer - NM with 3 failures at 4.55 in PV qualifying.

It's about time that record was broken.

It's 21 years since Jonathan Edwards rewrote the history books & a new record is long overdue.

It's not even like the long jump which has regressed markedly since the 90s; the triple jump has some great competitors that could pull off such jumps if they nail it right.

Also, I SHOULD have known Simpson should medal. She's really good in finals. I just thoguht the top 3 were to good for her, and normally they are, but 2 of them were too confident.

Muir would have had the bronze in a normal race, but she was going for the gold. Maybe it was worth it?
