I like Martyn Rooney but I didn't like that Martyn Rooney said Rabbah is the first world class first leg they've ever had. A little disrespectful to Conrad Williams.

Well, the women's 5k was a turn up for the books - Almaz Ayana is human after all! Clearly that 10k took a lot out of her, just like the 1500 took a lot out of Dibaba in Beijing last year. Smart running by Vivian Cheruiyot and co though. They didn't panic when Ayana moved to open up a 30-40m lead and try to stick with her, but they surely knew from the DL races over the last couple of years that if they stayed close enough they could reel her in before the finish since she has an almost non-existent finishing kick.
Interesting also to see Cheruiyot & Bolt say hello, hug each other and have a few words on the warm-up track before the session started. Quite comical too given the huge disparity in their heights. Presumably they know each other quite well from press conferences and/or kit sponsor events, maybe even the annual IAAF galas? Chuffed for Stefanidi to win the Pole Vault. She's really put herself out there this year competing frequently and, on balance, being the best throughout the season. Morris was so close though - just her knee grazing the bar off on her final attempt at 4.90! Great stuff too for Eliza McCartney - what a first global champs for her! It's about time there was another 5m vaulter outdoors and I think one of these 3 ladies or Yarisley Silva will do that in the next couple of years. Feeling a bit sad that it's the last day of the track and field today (just the men's marathon tomorrow).

Not quite the sheer drama of De Silva's win, but there were more in it right up to the end. I like Silva (Yarisley) and Suhr and was hoping for a home boost for Murer despite her injury, but it's always good to see new faces come through at the peak of competition. Pity for Holly but I think she's definitely got a global medal in her somewhere down the line. What do you think of Melissa's chances later Gavitar? She qualified well.... |

Does anyone think mo farah will not win the 5000 ?

It was truly incredible.
The 400m record is so hard to break: Michael Johnson spent his entire career trying to do it & finally managed it when he was 32! Van Niekirk, theoretically, has not reached his prime yet, so barring illness or injury & providing someone like Kirani James can be a major rival, he could reasonaly be expect to clock sub 43s in the future. |

We (USA) have now failed to finish a 4x100m men's race properly through DNF or DQ a whopping 9 times in an Olympics or a Worlds dating back to the 1995 world championships.
Nearly got run out of the medals altogether pre-DQ last night because of how quickly De Grasse closed in on Bromell. |

I have mixed feelings about the end of the T & F TBH. It's been a fantastic meet but the late nights and trying to avoid news during the day to watch the live repeats has been doing my head in. Otherwise I agree with your observations above. Ayana showed her mortality and it was great to see Vivian win. She's a real tough of the track who never gives up and it'll be a long, long time before her splits for 10 and 5 will be bettered in a single meet. Plus, I love her smile. I'd hug her too if I got the chance.

She qualified well.... ![]() I read on Twitter that Vivian is coming to Britain twice soon ... to run the GNR and then back again for her marathon debut in London in April - https://twitter.com/Trackside2016/st...32542721638400 Yeah, Melissa did qualify very well. She looked very smooth but she always does, even under pressure. I'll be delighted to be proved wrong but I think she's battling for 4th. I guess there's a possibility that one of Wambui, Semenya & Niyonsaba might not have recovered too well from the rounds (as happened with the favourite, Eunice Sum, last year) in which case Melissa would be the favourite from the rest to sneak the bronze if anyone can. I'm expecting it to be fast from the gun - the women's 800 finals at Olympics & Worlds nearly always are. However, if it's slow for a change (say 60 or 61 through the bell) then maybe the silver & bronze aren't so nailed on for FN & MW. Someone could 'surprise' for a silver or bronze off a slow pace, like Melissa or Joanna Jozwik. |

Nearly got run out of the medals altogether pre-DQ last night because of how quickly De Grasse closed in on Bromell. Now, having not run a sprint relay since my school days, perhaps I'm doing the technical difficulty of the baton exchange a disservice, but it doesn't seem that difficult for the incoming runner to place a baton in the outgoing runner's hand and for the outgoing runner to adjust his speed accordingly and place his hand in an accessible place. Other countries don't seem to find it that difficult. Earlier in the year I watched Tyson Gay at the Penn Relays trying to hand the baton on ... it's here on Youtube - the slow-mo is at 2:19 (red team third from the right). The anchor runner was saying, "look, here's my hand, put the baton in it!" but Tyson seemed to be almost refusing to, preferring to wave it around a bit before finally handing it off. I know they're running fast but still, the ineptitude was quite comical really. |

Centrowitz for gold! 3:50 (!!) with a 50.6 last lap.
Kiprop faded badly off Centro's shoulder on the home straight. Another silver for Makhloufi in Rio and a bronze for Willis to add to his London bronze. |

Chris Boardman explains very carefully that going round the outside bend in a cycling race adds several metres to the distance, which is offset by the faster speed.
I never fail to be amazed by the number of runners who seem happy to run well off the bend for several laps, often adding at least 10 metres. Besides the fall, kiprop just showed total tactical ineptitude, while centrowicz went the short way round. Rudisha always goes for the inside, for instance. |

Yeah, as I thought for 1-2-3 in the 800 though Bishop got a bit closer to Wambui than I thought she would. Jozwik closing very fast in 5th. The consolation of an almost sub-1:57 NR for Melissa and PBs for Jozwik & Lynsey. What does 'flat out Semenya' look like? How do we know when she's flat out? Has anyone ever seen her flailing, or her head rocking? Has she got the 1:53 in her sights or not, do you think? |

Oh! Chelimo of the USA DQ'd from silver in the 5k ... missed the replay to see exactly what happened. Quote:

Wow, yeah! Good spot. In the individual event standards have been down for some time now and seem to be creeping even lower year by year. They have been getting pretty close to some of the ladies' backsides these Games! |

The USA women's relay poses have been very muted. What happened to the Charlie's Angels style poses or something similar?
There you go ... Italy's women taking over the mantle for cheesy poses.

Rohler comes through for gold in the Javelin. Looked relatively poor since his 91m in June, even in qualification, but somehow he got it all back together again tonight.

Great bronze for GB in the W 4x400. Well done! It was getting pretty tight at one point.

^ Yep.
Well, it was certainly worth it for Ruth Beitia to reconsider her decision to retire after finishing 4th in London. If I recall correctly she called it a day and was actually officially retired over the 2012/13 off-season, not training and not intending to ever compete again. Somehow though she changed her mind and since then she's won World bronze, 2 World Indoor medals, 2 Euro Champs golds and now her first time on the top step of a global podium. |
