House of Run podcast hosts are always joking about it.)
Now, having not run a sprint relay since my school days, perhaps I'm doing the technical difficulty of the baton exchange a disservice, but it doesn't seem that difficult for the incoming runner to place a baton in the outgoing runner's hand and for the outgoing runner to adjust his speed accordingly and place his hand in an accessible place. Other countries don't seem to find it
that difficult.
Earlier in the year I watched Tyson Gay at the Penn Relays trying to hand the baton on ...

The anchor runner was saying, "look, here's my hand, put the baton in it!" but Tyson seemed to be almost refusing to, preferring to wave it around a bit before finally handing it off. I know they're running fast but still, the ineptitude was quite comical really.
