How can the Turks take pride in this. At least our (GBR) plastics generally have british born parents.

That's the thing, there's not much the IAAF can do about it if national governments give away passports with cornflake packets.

Usually these don't get overturned if there is clear evidence of a violation.

Other sports don't have such lax rules. Bedene still can't play Davis Cup for GB for example. The English FA would not be allowed to just go ahead and buy Thomas Muller.

I remember this happened at the Olympics in Beijing when he ran for Netherland Antilles. It would have been their first ever medal at the olympics

Pretty shoddy that they didn't go and tell Martina he was being DQ'd and let him find out from the media.

The rule is that it is up to the original federation to object, which prevents any athlete previously selected for certain competitions from running for the new federation for four years. The Cubans always object, so all Cuban athletes leaving their home countries always have a period of limbo. Back in the olden days, the Kenyans used to object, which is why Wilson Kipketer was not allowed to compete for Denmark, But now, the major African national federations are all being bribed as well, so no-one ever objects.

Some other sports, you only have to look at the English cricket and rugby teams to see we can be just as guilty.

The difference perhaps being choice rather than being bought.

Not a bit of it It is not our sporting federations who say who gets a British passport, it is the Government. It's obviously the other way round in Turkey.

Anyway, Jade Lally has made it into the second half of the discus.

Well done to Jazmin! She always steps up on the big occasion.

Churandy seems like a cool guy ... "You might not have won" ... "Oh well, what will be is what will be." Departs with a wide grin.

Those Israelis in the 10k look suspiciously non-Israeli too?
Edit: Yep, Ethiopian names.

It's the IAAF's sport. They can set the rules about eligibility for international competition?

I don't follow rugby so can't comment on what they do but I don't think what the English cricket team have done has been on the same level as this rampant cheating from Turkey. Most of those non-English born England cricketers came over at a young age (some as very young kids) and none of them came over to go straight in the national team, they went into the county cricket system.

But the point I was making was that the lax rules are a choice the IAAF have made not something that has been forced upon them. If they wanted to they could stop this.

Arikan wins the 'Turkish' duel for gold in 28:18.52.

Fifth place for Griffiths with a 28:28.55 PB (now corrected).

Wow, are you suggesting there is some sort of human trafficking going on, I've never seen any suggestion of that before.

Israel's Ethiopians are Ethiopian Jews who moved to Israel because they were being persecuted in their homeland, not because they were great athletes. Naturally, some of them are better long distance runners than their compatriots.

PB for Dewi Griffiths in 5th - can't ask for more than that in a major championships.

The 10,000m, already on its death bed, withered just a bit more tonight,

I guess you either have no idea what human trafficking is or you are trying to bait me. Lets get back to the sport and leave the back stabbing to other forums

So he's lost out on a medal because the rules are wrong.
