Feel sorry for Allyson as you could still see her doing something in the final. Of those going, only Bowie looks like a medal contender.

So they changed the Rio timetable specifically to facilitate Felix competing in the 200 and 400 and she doesn't qualify for the 200.

On a similar note I see Leshawn "My Ding-a-Ling" Merritt is doubling up over 200 and 400 despite some reports yesterday that he was opting out of the 200 and that High Schooler Noah Lyes would get the place.

British Athletics press releases say Matthew Yates. Think I remember Crammy saying at the trials he was coached by Matt Yates also.

The conspiracy theorists are out on social media convinced there will be behind the scenes manoeuvres to get Felix in the 200m. Not convinced myself

Anyway, the moving finger writes.....

Next up, the Herculis Diamond League from Monaco on Friday night, Eurosport 1.

And Eurosport also have an evening highlights show from the European Youth* Athletics Champs from Tbilisi, Georgia for a couple of hours every night over the weekend as well.

Important Mascot info here - it's a squirrel.

http://tbilisi2016.com/en/Mascot

Never quite figured out what the Amsterdam mascot was supposed to, incidentally. It seemed to be some kind of cat with a tulip for a head. Netherlands are not exactly famous for wild animals, except probably water fowl.

He was a lion called Adam (they have zoos, I guess) - http://www.european-athletics.org/ne...mps/index.html

I read elsewhere that his mane of flames represented Amsterdam's history as an Olympic host city.

Seb Rodger finally got his Rio standard... left it til the very last day didn't he! 49.29 SB.

I'm worried the uptight selectors still won't take him due to him only having one standard. I'd hope that's not the case

Something you may not have noticed: Ashley Spencer ran all 3 rounds of the 400m and 400mH and made the team for the latter. Tough cookie!

Thanks for these - thought my recording had missed them until I re-checked the timetable to see it was ES that missed them.

Good championships I thought. Nice appetiser for Rio.

It was really good to hear from some of the competitors that are usually ignored in the mixed zone. What did others think of Fiona May's efforts?

I thought that Fiona was very poor and in many cases she just seemed to repeat what Jonathan had just asked her and she made Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson sound insightful and eloquent in comparison. Hopefully it was just nerves and she is much better off camera.

Here's confirmation (if it were needed) that TeamGB has qualified for the men's 4x100m relay in Rio.

Full US Team listings here - There's actually a lot of new names, many of the old guard are gone. Lots of East African names in the men's distance events, but they pretty much all have come through the US College System.

You're welcome.

Yeah, Fiona wasn't great. was she? Fortunately (?), having watched athletics on the BBC for years and years, I have low expectations of the pundits.

On the whole though I thought Eurosport did a good job (despite some shoddy continuity/linking between the commentators and Jonathan.) The chat was kept for the beginning and end of sessions and, as a result, we saw that there's still a load going on in an athletics stadium when people aren't running on the track. Who knew, eh?
I liked that they were keen to give the field events their due attention by doing that and also by using the split screen, whether or not the event had any British competitors. Martin Gillingham was very good, I thought - knowledgeable & well-prepared across the board and just the right amount of enthusiasm. Overall, it felt more like a broadcast for the athletics fan rather than just an opportunity for patriotic flag-waving as we see too often on the BBC.

One guy that really impressed me, and not sure if I saw him mentioned here is Italian sprinter Fillipo Tortu. He was only 3/100 behind Martina in semi, with 10.19 a new PB. Just turned 18.

Not going to Rio, but could very well be the European Champion 2018

Yes, I thought Fiona was like a rabbit in the headlights. Hopefully she will bet better with time.

Overall ES did well, and I loved the split screen. As you say Gavitar, just shows how much is going on whilst we are elsewhere. Martin Gillingham did a good job too I thought.

Probably not a headline you'd ever see on athleticsweekly.com or iaaf.org but the Germans seem fine with saying it - http://www.leichtathletik.de/news/ne...eidung-stinkt/

Germany have named their team of 92 for Rio

Fiona was an improvement on Maurice Greene but that's damning with feint praise. Not a fan of Gillingham myself and Stuart Storey needs to retire. Crammy & Cotter are far superior. I do like that Eurosport interview a wider range of athletes though.

Surprised not to see Kendra Harrison's name on the US Olympic team. I see she finished 6th in their trials. Second fastest woman in history and she's not at the Olympics.

That's the US trials system in place.

Agree - the best part of their coverage for me was hearing from athletes who are usually overlooked, and the split screen was also good. The BBC team are far superior. I wonder if they (BBC) will cover the next European Championships in Berlin.

It's brutal.
There are rumours about that Felix will somehow be shoehorned onto the 200m. I can't see how they can do that though.

LOL, the Lion is the national sporting mascot in my country (and has been for years; going back at least almost 30 years).

By the way, from what I understand the results (or rather records) in the heptathlon are not official as they forgot to do a wind check in the 200mtr series (at least in the one with Vetter). Which would mean that Schippers still has the Dutch record (lol).

You're kidding!! But we did discuss whether, like others, she would slip down the greasy pole again. For me she's the real world record holder. I wonder if there should be a rule where anyone with a world leading performance gets an automatic spot like champions do in the world championships.

Athletics boasted 2,231 competitors (out of 10,768 across all sports) at London 2012, whereas the WCh attract 1,700-1,900 (even with the wildcard option).

Nowadays the overall limit for Summer Olympics is 10,500, and the decision to add 5 sports to Tokyo 2020 (subject to ratification in the next IOC Session) means athletics will be fighting to maintain its quota, not add to it.
