Terribly sad news
I didn't realise he was ill either His ride on Shahrastani in the "Dancing Brave " Derby is vastly under-rated |

Very sad to hear about the choirboy - he was a great horseman and like so many of that time able to give a sympathetic ride or be very strong in the saddle ... a true world class jockey for so many years.
With the untimely death of Pat Eddery it does beg the question just what damage does years of virtual fasting do to these jockeys once they finish up?? I don't doubt the demon drink was involved as well ... |

I'm shocked about Walter Swinburn's death at a relatively young age... Wasn't expecting that at all. He was part of that era of great jockeys in the 1980s along with Lester Piggot, Pat Eddery, Willie Carson and Steve Cauthen. RIP

Very sad to hear about Walter. I remember him as a soft spoken and intelligent and articulate person. He was a fine rider too and a man for the big occasion, winning many of the world's famous races.

Francome told At The Races: "I spoke to him a couple of months ago and he seemed in really good form. It's absolutely shocking he should die aged 55. No age at all.
When someone of this age dies (and I am not far off it), you usually find there is an underlying medical reason. Rather selfishly, it has rung alarm bells for me.

Walter's dad Wally was a well known English jockey based in Ireland, but interestingly Walter always regarded himself an Irishman and carried an Irish passport. He must have been one of the youngest ever jockeys to ride a winner of the Epsom Derby, there can't have been too many teenagers who have won the race.

The Racing Post site has gone 'Beta' for me as the roll out of the new site continues
I'll get used to it but it seems strange at the moment I've got the basic basic subscription One negative thing I've noted is that 'Quotes' appear to have disappeared from the horse form page. I usually checked this for each horse in the race to see what connections were saying about them |

Coneygree is out of the King George after not working well.
Sad to hear Lord Gyllene has died at the ripe old age of 28. |

King George tips then anyone?
With Coneygree out, it seems that if Thistlecrack does run it will effectively be a straight fight between Thistlecrack and Cue Card. Douvan is one to watch though if he gets a run. Can never rule out Silviniaco Conti and Irish Cavalier either. But I'm backing Cue Card for this race. |

It looks a straight match and with only 7 runners likely there's no point looking for an EW shot It's the dilemma - proven class against huge potential I'm going for the proven class - Cue Card for me ! We know what he can do but Thistlecrack is inexperienced over fences and the fences at Kempton are stiff and unforgiving and the pace of top class chasers might put him under pressure |

You have to go with Cue Card but nice to see Tizzard take this route with Thistlecrack - although I think after this race he will probably stick to the novice route.
This race really does show the lack of quality in the UK though and the power is very much in Ireland at the moment ... not that long ago they didn't have a decent consistent staying chaser. Thistlecrack has never stuck me as a natural over fences - he sort of runs in snatches, but he does have some engine. Very unusual for a champion staying hurdler to also be a champion over the larger obstacles as it seems to be a completely different rhythm they race at ... should be an interesting watch. |

Oddschecker reporting only 5 runners in the King George now. What a weak renewal of the race.
Current odds with CORAL: Cue Card: 6/5 JF Thistlecrack: 6/5 JF Josses Hill: 14/1 Tea For Two: 16/1 Silviniaco Conti: 20/1 |

It's essentially a straight fight now but having said that it would be unwise to rule out Silviniaco Conti for this race. That horse has so much class and although some say he's past his best, I still think he's good enough to compete with the top horses in the country. The run in the Betfair was disappointing but I think that was mostly down to the ground.

Still, a watchers brief rather than a bet for me, except in the tipping comps. |
