Sorry I can't help tso, my hours have changed at the moment and I'll miss most of the races (if I could find a 'gutted' emoji, I'd insert it here).

3 horses killed on the first day of the Cheltenham 'Festival', not that you'd ever find out from Channel 4's rose tinted coverage.
Hey ho, only horses though. |

Hey ho, only horses though. But I don't suppose they keep count. As Ruby Murray - or whatever the hell his name is - said once 'they're only horses, they can be replaced. Humans can't' |

The deaths of horses during racing are always a cause of pain for their connections but I agree, the TV does tend to 'gloss over' it as much as possible.
But look at it another way, there'd be a helluva lot more fit/healthy and surplus horses heading to the slaughterhouses or neglected in fields/barns if it weren't for this sport too. Whilst a few lose their lives, in the same way sportsmen and women lose their lives in the line of duty, the vast majority come home unscathed. They also receive good care that they might not receive outside of racing too. These horses have been bred for over 300 years to race and jump. I know it's a contentious issue but just a few points to ponder. I'm saving my real scathe for part 2. Why the hell did Cheltenham choose to let in - and keep in - half the cast of Geordie Shore flashing their tits from VIP boxes and drunken yobs (aka overpaid young footballers) pissing into beer glasses in full view of everyone? |

Retire him now I say. End on this monstrous high that cannot be topped.
Nice also to see Any Currency win the Cross Country for his likeable connections after a few near misses in the race over the years. Dreadful day for Barry Geraghty. |

Yeah Geraghty had a shocker - the first race if you swap the jockeys you get a different result. Didn't get any better for him - he must have decided their was better ground on the wide outside but he gave away valuable ground and momentum by doing so.

The Willie Mullins horse won on merit. |

Unfortunately No More Heroes died yesterday raising the death count to 4 for the first two days.
I'm rather ambivalent regarding racing. On the one hand I enjoy watching world class jockeys riding these amazing animals, but I sort of feel I shouldn't be watching it. For instance, I thought yesterday's Champion Chase was extremely entertaining, but in my opinion this number of fatalities is an unacceptably high price to pay in the name of entertainment. Of course it's tiny compared with racing's biggest scandal, the huge number of perfectly healthy racehorses that are slaughtered either because they are no longer earning their keep or because they never make the grade in the first place, and it's something the majority of the public are completely unaware of. Or maybe the likes of myself should take trainer Paul Nicholls' advice to such people and just "grow up". |

Nicholls didn't phrase that very well, but his general point is that risk exists every day
People are killed in motor accidents, hit by buses, murdered etc. Does this mean there is a risk of me dying every time I leave my house? To some extent there is, but I am not going to be a hermit and stay locked up in my house forever. |

Anybody know where AP McCoy has disappeared to?? First day he was very prominent in the coverage with Mick Fitzgerald relegated to a few snippets and MCCoy even co-hosted the highlights show on that first day.
Hasn't been seen since - have I missed something?? |

Just doing the rounds. Been on At the Races, 5 Live, working for Bill Hills, corporate gigs. Would expect him to be prominent on Channel 4 again tomorrow.
Doubt Walsh has had so many armchair rides in his career as this years festival rides ... |

That's good to hear scruffywuffy. Thanks to you she dodged a bullet (literally and figuratively!) and was one of the lucky ones. As you obviously know only too well many thousands each year aren't so lucky.
Of course you'd never get an inkling of any of this listening to the rose tinted nonsense form Channel 4's coverage - and according to them, a brilliant week for racing despite 4 of these amazing animals being killed - and there's still one day to go. |

I know the advantages he's had in life, but for Joseph O'Brien to have achieved all that he did in the saddle, and then go on to train a Cheltenham Festival winner before his 23rd birthday is a remarkable achievement.

Another horse dead, or as good as, in the 2:50, Long Dog. Broken leg flapping around, and anyone who knows anything about racing knows that means a bullet through the head.
It'll be interesting how Channel 4 handle this because they can hardly ignore it as viewers will have clearly seen what happened. However they have an unwritten rule to gloss over such things on Gold Cup day. |

Really? Considering it was mentioned in the commentary, and after the race, they didn't do much of a job of 'glossing over it'.
It's almost like you're watching purely so you can be offended... Death Toll so far - 6 and counting. Enjoy your racing. |
