Nothing loaded about it at all. A simple, straightforward question which, for whatever reason, you are not comfortable answering. You seemed to be aggrieved that I had suggested horse welfare meant less to you than it does to me. As I said, now is the ideal opportunity for you to clarify matters. Otherwise it would only be reasonable to conclude my assumption was correct.

I don't know who this Royal we is, but to answer your question, I don't just care about horses being killed on the telly at Cheltenham.

For anyone who wishes to know about other racehorse deaths around the country;

[quote=Aftershow;81861128]No, I don't think it's "acceptable". However the sport is what it is, and unfortunately there are some fatalities. As there are with horses in other sporting disciplines, in working horses, and horses who are essentially field ornaments. Long Dog appeared to break a leg whilst running on the flat, exactly the same as he could have done in a field. QUOTE]

I'd be interested to know how many horses that are "field ornaments" have to be shot - or how many have to be shot from simply running in a field than on the flat in racing - especially as there are far far more horses turned out in a field than ever race - same with other equestrian disciplines - how many horses had to be shot show jumping, doing dressage or polo - or other working horses that you mention - police horses perhaps ? It's simply not comparable,

What a daft decision:

After being sent off the 1-2 favourite to see off six rivals in the ApolloBet Bet On Lotteries Open Hunters' Chase, Long Run made much of the running on his first start for 672 days, but weakened quickly in the straight and owner Robert Waley-Cohen immediately called time on his fantastic career.

Sam Waley Cohen said :

He stopped to nothing and was very tired, so I just wanted to nurse him home and keep him in one piece. You have to have the horse's welfare in your mind as well as riding for all your worth. When it's a 50-50 call, I think you lean on the side of the welfare of the horse."

Sam Waley-Cohen was found guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing in that he failed to ride out on a horse that could have finished third.

The on-course stewards suspended the amateur rider for seven days on dates to be notified by the British Horseracing Authority

Whatever happened to common sense?

They retired the horse immediately - it's not like they're trying to lower his handicap !

What a daft decision. As for he could have finishing third at 1/2 with only 6 runners it is unlikely anyone backed Long Run ew and if they did he'd have needed to finish second for a punter to win any money so the only people that lost out were the connections.

Long Run was a top class horse and he deserves a long and happy retirement.

talking of the start of the Flat season.....

the first two year old race of the season will now he held at Wolverhampton on Friday

Traditionalists will be appalled !........what about the Brocklesby !

Also of course a big change this year with most of the 2yo maiden races being scrapped in favour of a National Hunt style 'Novice' structure..........be interesting to see how this turns out

Indeed. And as they retired him immediately, it's not like they can even be accused of trying to manipulate his handicap mark. A bemusing decision.

I've been lucky enough to see Long Run up close a few times, and he always looked incredible. A stunning horse, who will hopefully have a long and enjoyable retirement.

BIB but only because Musselburgh NH cancelled early and Wolves was added. Still, bit of a turn-up.

So looking for forward to a whole battalion of exciting first-season sires --- Born To Sea, Excelebration, Fame And Glory, Famous Name, Frankel, Harbour Watch, Nathaniel, Sir Prancealot and So You Think.

It'd also be nice if we could see some more Harbinger offspring this side of the world. I think that Bibliotheca has been the only runner so far.

A couple of bookies are offerng odds oh the 'winningmost' first season sire

Best prices.....

2016 Flat Season – Top First Season Sire by Wins

Harbour Watch 7/2
Casamento 5/1
Frankel 5/1
Bated Breath 9/1
Power 11/1
Excelebration 12/1
Sir Prancealot 14/1

Mares covered.......

Harbour Watch 122
Casamento 115
Frankel 98
Bated Breath 103
Power 82
Excelebration 87
Sir Prancealot 102

Wouldn't fancy Frankel at those odds......most of his will probably be late season Classics types, couple of runs at the back-end and put away

Harbour Watch could be a good thing with the numbers and he was a speedy 2yo

Sir Prancealot will surely get speedy 2yo who won't be too precious to run a dozen times and rack up nursery wins, same for Bated Breath

Q. About placepots

If I do a placepot in a six-runner race which is reduced to four, does the placepot only apply to the winner ?
I suppose what I'm asking is does the placepot apply in the same way as each-way, so three places in all races of 8+ runners, with an extra place for 16+ handicaps and so on.

yes, fraid so.......it becomes winner only if there are 4 runners

I believe they do follow the 'standard' EW rules

Shame, but at least I had the winner as well. One line going forward instead of two.

The start of the Flat season has always been a bit of a dog's breakfast, well in recent years anyway

It used to be fairly straightforward........the season started with the Lincoln Meeting at Doncaster and the first race of the season was an apprentice race so an apprentice could be leading jockey for a hour or two. And the first 2yo race of the season was the Brocklesby

With the advent of the all weather this traditional start lost some value because there's now flat racing all year round........but even so the 'traditions' remained in the form of 'the start of the Turf Flat season'

Now it's all gone to pot

We've already had three 2yo races on the AW

Now today we have the first Turf meeting of the season.......at Redcar !

The start of the Flat season used to be an event........now it just slides in unnoticed

My own view is that they should move the Lincoln Meeting back so that Easter never interferes with it.........move it after the Grand National. Hold it the weekend before the Craven and Greenham meetings...........so we get a solid start to the season with Doncaster, Newmarket and Newbury holding big races in the first week

Don't allow any 2yo races on the AW until after the Brocklesby

Agree with your post Swingaleg, but can't see them changing anything

It's now 12 months a year near enough on both codes

Might as well do the Champion Jockey Jan-December as well as that seems to be arbitrary date wise

Zoffany - although that was largely down to Queally's brain fart. I suppose you could also argue Nathaniel too (at Newmarket).

But yes, CDA certainly gave Frankel a run for his money that day. A remarkable career, with such longevity at the top level. Here's to a long and happy retirement

I feel a bit sorry for Queally

He had to deal with the pressure of 'Frankel' and cope with the illness and death of Sir Henry.......highs and lows

I don't think he's ever recovered from that emotional roller coaster

He was interviewed live on RUK at Salisbury the day after Sir Henry's death was announced and he was very articulate and I thought he was a very impressive young man

I've been rooting for him ever since but his career appears to be going nowhere.

I'm not knowledge about the horse's so I'm hoping someone here can help.

Someone drew a horse for me for the grand national but we couldn't draw horses only numbers.

(I'm not at work to ask but I got a text saying I got number 25 'not too great but not awful'

I'm not sure what this means - can someone explain?

It's not very clear

The horse currently numbered 25 is Goonyella.......an Irish horse who might end up as around 10th favourite or something like that

But the final list of runners won't be known until a couple of days before the race and the final race numbers as for the race won't be allocated until then

If one of the horses currently listed above Goonyella doesn't run then he'll move up to 24 and if two of them don't run he'll move up to 23 and so on

So it depends on whether you've got Goonyella or you've got whichever horse ends up as number 25 by the time of the race.

Thanks for that. I'm 100% sure it will be the horse that ends up as 25.

Are you able to tell me how the numbers are allocated? A fella earlier was talking about weights and handcaps?

it's a handicap race so the horses carry different amounts of weight to attempt to equalise their chances

The best horse carries the highest weight and the others carry less depending on how much worse they are

Every racehorse has an official rating which goes up and down over time as they win races or keep losing

So say the horse with the highest rating might be rated 165 and will carry the biggest weight, say 11 stone 10 pounds.........then a horse rated 160 would carry 5 pounds less, ie 11 stone 5 pounds.......and a horse rated 150 will carry 15 pounds less and so on

You'll have a list horses with the top rated as Number 1 carrying the highest weight and the others will be listed below in descending order of rating and weight carried

If too many horses are entered for the race they ballot them out from the bottom upwards, ie the worst horse gets balloted out first, then the second worst horse etc

For the Grand National a maximum of 40 can run so you're fine with number 25......he'll be around the middle of the weights which is a good place to be.

Didn't see this as I was watching the cricket

Mighty long ban

He's going to miss Punchestown where he would have had some strongly fancied horses for JP

.Barry Geraghty was handed a 30-day ban by the Limerick stewards for his ride in second on Noble Emperor in the Book Online At www.limerickraces.ie Handicap Hurdle.

didn't see it either but reading the reports, it seems harsh as none of the other jockeys were done and presumably they were just as complicit in letting the winner slip the field

I backed Goonyella ante-post last year and really fancied him, but obviously he didn't make the cut.

I've backed him again this year, not least because if he won without me having a penny on, I'd be bloody fuming The forecast rain for this week will be most welcome if it materialises.
