Do you or don't you answer the door if you aren't expecting anybody?

I've just had a very loud aggressive knock on my front door. It wasn't so much of a 'knock' as somebody banging on the door. And they persisted for a good few minutes. I think I know who it was. It was the TV License goons as I don't watch live television or have a license. They get ignored and so do their threat-o-grams. That's not the main issue though, as threads have been done about that already.

I'm not very well today, I have a tummy bug so I am having a 'lazy' day resting up and not feeling too great. Unless I am expecting somebody, I never answer the door. I have all of my lights off regardless, so it looks as if the house is empty. I am in bed listening to an audio book.

However I am wondering if other people are like me and if you don't know who it is, you simply ignore it?

No, never (answer unexpected knocks, that is).

I live in an attic flat, three stories up. My family always ring my phone when they come down. If anyone rings my doorbell, its usually Mormons or jovo's.....

It not worth going down stairs for that.....

Nope and I have a door curtain so they cant even see in and see me wallking around in the hall!

I ignore everyone who I don't recognise, mainly because I can't be arsed answering the door to the odd sales or charity people asking for money.

I have a peep hole in my apartment door, a great handy little thing.

I answer all knocks because we have too many visitors to know who's coming in advance. Maybe i need to get an appointments book and a receptionist

I check to see who it is, but normally I will speak to them. We don't use the front door, so I mostly open the window and speak through that... the floor in my living room is about a foot higher than the front path so I feel fairly safe.

I let my dog bark first, but we don't get many unexpected callers- even the delivery people have trouble finding us. Had a lady looking for her lost cat once but that's about it.

...wait, people not answering the door if they're not expecting someone is a thing?

Is it just me (looks like it so far, I guess) or is that just weird?

First of all, I doubt that there are many people like you, if any.
Second of all, I always answer the door buzzer, as you never know who it might be, although as I have a door intercom, I soon find out.
If it's Jehovah's witnesses, some other 'bible puncher', somebody selling something I don't need, or someone canvassing for votes, I can politely give them the bum's rush without going to the door.

I do tend to answer the door more often than not, although i live in a building with buzzer entry so there's a good chance that if someone is in, they're in for a reason.

That said, I've had a few cold callers and capita salesmen who have weaseled their way in from time to time, so i'll certainly politely tell the cold callers no thanks and shut the door on the capita people.

No. I ignore them. Don't care if they see me looking at them.

I always answer the door but I'm very abrupt with people........if they start with any small talk I just say 'What do you want?' and then about 3 seconds in to whatever they want I tell them I don't want it and shut the door

We answer to everyone except the JWs. Just to be clear, thats not Jason Watkins and family, he'd be ok.

I have social anxiety, sometimes the buzzer to my flat going off is one of the most spine chilling moments for me when I'm not expecting anyone. People may think I'm pathetic but at times I get so worked up over who it could be my blood runs cold.

The TV Licence "Inspectors" - they're just salespeople employed by Capita at the end of the day.

Thanks. I'd bring a bottle as well

Yeah, the ironic thing is I've been waiting to having it out with the TVL bod, but I wasn't in the mood tonight, plus I'm in my jim jams and don't fancy answering the door whilst not properly attired. Also it wasn't even a civil knock. It was an aggressive banging. Which immediately makes me think "I'm not answering that!"

Normally I answer it just in case it is important. 9 times out of 10 it is some delivery driver dropping off a parcel for once of my neighbours because they have gone out.

Oh, I'm so up on Capita and the TVL 'inspectors.'

Just to make it clear, I am not evading paying a TV License, I just don't watch live television and that is a whole other debate.

I dont think that is pathetic, my home is my sanctuary, my safe place, its like a womb and I dont let anyone come in or even want them at my front door if I havent invited them.

I've learnt my lesson I will never answer unexpected door buzzer/knocks.

Same as my mobile phone.

Because I'm so high up and windows are slanted, it really does feel like I'm hidden from the world.

It feels pretty good....

I can get it if you've got social anxiety, but otherwise it just seems weird.

This, and the countless threads about this subject prove different. Every time there is mention of this subject on this forum, tons of people are like the OP.
