I took out a contract with Tescomobile for a Moto G in February 2014, around the 22nd. I made the first monthly payment on the day I took the contract out, and have paid by DD on the 22nd of each month since.

I assume that the payment on January 22nd will be the last one.

Should I expect Tescomobile to contact me to tell me that the contract is now ended, and offering me options such as Sim-only or a new phone?

My "accounting period" isn't 22nd to 21st, but from the 9th of one month to the 8th of the next. How will this affect the end of the contract?

Your contract doesn't end, you simply reach the end of your minimum term.

Your contract will carry on exactly as it is unless you upgrade or terminate by giving 30 days notice or using a PAC.

To clarify the above, what usualy happens at the end of a contract ( or minimum term) is that you go onto a 1 month (30 day) rolling contract you can cancel this at any time, after giving a suitable notice without penalty.
In most cases it can be far cheaper to move onto a sim only 30 day/1month deal as youi have paid off the handset subsidy.
In simplistic terms when you get a new phone on contract, the cost you pay consists of the line rental+call packages ( data/texts/minutes) and the hand set cost spread over the length of the contract.
once the contract is finished ( minimum term) you have paid the handset fee off, however you will still be charged for it unless you tell them to stop.

Things to consider:
Keep your handset and go sim only 1 month until you decide on what to do
Keep your handset and change to pay as you go, while you decide on a new phone/contract deal
Keep your handset and consider buying anew handset outright, then go to sim only 12 month contract

As some other people have mentioned, your contract doesn't end, you just reach the minimum term for cancellation without charge as long as you give 30 days notice. It makes sense financially to review your options at this point and upgrade or drop down to a sim only or cheaper option if you want to keep using your existing phone and not upgrade, as the phone subsidy often forms part of the more expensive monthly price throughout the minimum term.

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy with my Moto G; it's a version 1, and though I'd like the version 3, there's no reason to upgrade just for the sake of it. So I'll go for a SIM-only deal.

Presumably my contract ends the day before the second anniversary of taking it out, so if I took it out on 22nd Feb, 2014, I give notice as from the 22nd January 2016. They shouldn't then take the full amount by DD on 22/2, but only the cost of the SIM-only?

Will this require a physical new SIM card, or can it be done by software?

If you stay with Tesco you don't need a new sim, the current one will continue to work as nothing changes. If you are going to move to a sim only with Tesco you won't give notice, you will call up and request a price plan change from the end of the minimum term.

Thanks, d123. I've no reason not to stay with Tesco, but I'll look at prices with other networks anyway. However, I wouldn't change for the sake of a saving of £1 or so a month.

Your plan of action should then be to phone Tesco when you have 30 days left and ask for your PAC, when they ask why tell them you need to save money so are going to move to a cheaper service (do a little research, look at other networks sim only rates, like Three) and take it from there.

They might offer you a retention deal, if they don't you can look around and if you find something then use the PAC and move. It you don't find something, ring back and ask to change to whatever they offered you in the first call (they'll always offer something, even if it is just the standard sim only).

Getting a PAC doesn't mean you have to leave.

They're not allowed to take a PAC request as an end of contract request are they? Or am I talking bollocks?

You're right, a PAC is valid for 30 days, and if not used the account keeps running...

You are, a PAC when used has the same effect as termination, when the PAC is used and the number transferred it terminates the old account.

It actually isn't possible to give notice and request a PAC, as the PAC request will override the notice (you can only use a PAC on a live line). Therefore, you get the PAC and use it and it acts the same as giving notice and terminating.
