Surprised nobody else has started a thread for this, maybe I missed it.

But I think this drama series is a landmark for UK network television, a German drama series not about "The War" or the Nazis or the Holocaust. The trailer looks very promising as it is not a clone of the brilliant: "The Lives of Others" which was a serious drama about the Stasi's encroachment on all aspect of people's lives.

Deutschland '83 looks more like a coming of age drama with humour and pop culture overtones, much more light-hearted content and more fitting with modern Germany.

9pm tonight in the "Indian Summers" and "Humans" headline slot, so big expectations to meet.

I think it's in English subtitles, which slightly puts me off as I don't 100% focus when watching tv.

There was one in the US section for some reason.

I've only just realised it's on Channel 4 rather than More 4, given the concept is not dissimilar to The Americans which got dumped on ITV encore I'm not sure it will do as well as Channel 4 hope.

Hope so, I won't know what they're saying without subtitles.

The Americans was dropped by ITV after the two season contract ended.

For over year there was no UK broadcaster who wanted season three.

Luckily, ITV Encore, which is a Sky/ITV joint effort negotiated with 21st Fox for seasons three and four. I expect having a Murdoch connection, Encore got a very good deal.

Totally different to C4 moving a show between channels.

This has been on Irish TV for some weeks now. I tried watching it but the German language put me off - far too gutteral for me. I watch French and Swedish/Danish subtitled shows no problem but this I just could not take.

My hubby watches it though and thinks its brilliant.

Surely the fact that it is up against both the new series of Endeavour and the (possibly) epic War & Peace means it will bomb, at least in the overnights?

Personally I can't cope with subtitles on a Sunday evening but I will record it and give it a chance.

I'm watching it on RTE2 in Ireland where it's already underway. It's a very stylish and atmospheric spy thriller set in East and West Germany, reminds me a little of The Odessa File in places. Well worth a look I can assure you.

I usually watch these subtitled dramas in the afternoon after going for a run with no distractions such as interweb or magazine.

C4+1 will hopefully come in handy for Endeavour fans also wanting to watch the German show and there's iPlayer for War and Peace. Although it's about time BBC1 started doing a late-night non-signed mid-week repeat for their big dramas now they've abandoned the promised plans for BBC1+1.

How many people will start to watch this thinking it is a German remake of This is England?

You could help by reading them out loud for him. Maybe even do some comic German accents (think 'Allo 'Allo).

Yes, I know most people don't actually need to miss anything these days with the various viewing platforms available, but I do suspect a lot of people are influenced by the initial overnights figures, and if they see a poor rating tend to think, meh, won't bother then.

I'm sure a much larger slice of viewers will prefer to to see W&P and Endeavour live than D83.

Have the Beeb abandoned the plans for BBC1+1 then? I hadn't heard. A huge mistake I would have thought.

Forced to do so IIRC. Still, they shouldn't announce/promise things that aren't nailed down beforehand.
