I watched a very interesting documentary recently listing a sort of "Top 10" of spy movies and tv series, but they asked ex CIA and MI5 people to give their opinions why.

The original "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" with Alec Guinness as George Smiley came out as the number one choice.

Believing the exact 180 degree opposite of anything a spook or ex-spook tells you is probably a good way to proceed.

I think people are wising up that it's not just English speaking countries that can make top class TV dramas, the quality is very high in Europe these days as well.

One of my favourites from 1966 was "The Quiller Memorandum" and this clip here where Quiller first meets 'Pol' at the Berlin Olympic stadium. Brilliant acting typical of Guinness.

It was the height of Cold War years and quite a chilling movie at the time.

Good choice followed by The Spy who came in from the cold.

Just caught up with the last hour of the finale... so many going ons there, many with loose ends, that it must have been made that way to encourage a second series. I read that link which hinted towards a Deutschland 86, I so hope this happens. It's been a great series despite the minor flaws which didn't detract from the action, twists and tension it gave.

And I don't know why but seeing an old car like the Ford Granada being driven like it's an everyday car made me smile. Around those times and round my way it was seen as a prestigious car to own and something my Dad liked considering he was driving Ford Cortina which was seen at the one step down from it.

well he knew from earlier than she kept running away from the family home (when he sent Stamm and Alex to get her) and may have thought she was in a relationship with the now known East German spy, so ignorantly did not think of her. That said I'm still unsure if he or Alex pulled that trigger, or who they aimed for (i.e. one had seen the other and kill them instead of themselves??)

Perhaps with Martin's cover blown - however good his intentions were - it would be unrealistic for him to go undercover again in the west (or at least in West Germany) - perhaps Thomas could / will be the focus of any Deutschland 86.

My thoughts to in regards to Thomas.

The final episode ran for nearly two hours. So much happened, it would take far too long to explain. Channel 4 are bound to repeat it....save you anticipation till then. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent series. Just caught up with the finale. As others have said, a bit far fetched at times, but still very watchable.
I have friends in Berlin. Both from the 'Ost' & West. From the tales they've told me, it was very much like that in the GDR. However, my East friends are quick to add "Don't feel sorry for us. It wasn't THAT bad." The west can also see itself as 'liberating' the East Germans & others (along with Gorbachev obviously). East Germans don't see it that way. Indeed, lots of them would go back to pre 1989 in a shot. They miss the security & relatively worry & crime free life. As long as you were prepared to toe the line obviously.

Incidentally, a lot of the interior (intelligence HQ) & some exterior shots were done in the actual former Stasi HQ in East Berlin. It's now a museum & open to the public. I've been a couple of times & its well worth a visit.

I'm puzzled as to who topped themselves at the end. I'm inclined to think it was General Edel rather than Alex.

I hope there's another series, although according to Google it hasn't been commissioned yet.

For those who are interested in everyday life and the "look & feel" of the GDR, here are two videos with rare footage:

Dutch feature-length documentary about East Berlin's Friedrichstrasse, right next to the wall (1987)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ofCh5FGFKI

Swedish "Trafikmagasinet" report with tips for a visit to the GDR by car (1985)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpQxb4NHH4c

Even if you don't understand the languages, I think both are very interesting and even entertaining.

Please stop talking about spy genre stuff like Tinker, Tailor, Bored to Death Spy.

Deutschland '83 was a nostalgic cultural and social piece about a coming-of-age young man and his devotion to his mother. It was beautifully written, acted and shot and I hope no attempt is made to cash in with a sequel. 1983 was a unique and scary moment in history, a sequel could only diminish the original.

Missing it badly now on Sundays, as Channel 4 is back to showing six hours of movies again, that is lazy scheduling.

Ahh, now I'm inclined to think it was Alex! Here's hoping for another series so we can find out.

Regarding Schweppenstette's "Dad Dancing" - I just loved it. It put me in mind of Wiesler in 'The Lives of Others'. I must be preaching to the converted on this thread but if there is just one of you that has not seen it, please seek it out.

I think it sublime.

Love that film! I was thinking that we will see Schweppenstette working in the mail steaming room with Wiesler in the next series

Perhaps someone a little more conversant with the language than me could confirm but was there an attempt at humour in the naming of Mrs Rauch (Martin's aunt/boss) and Mrs Nett (the generals secretary)? Respectively Mrs Smoke - (she did a lot) and Mrs Nice - she definately wasn't)!
