Deutschland '83 was a nostalgic cultural and social piece about a coming-of-age young man and his devotion to his mother. It was beautifully written, acted and shot and I hope no attempt is made to cash in with a sequel. 1983 was a unique and scary moment in history, a sequel could only diminish the original.

Missing it badly now on Sundays, as Channel 4 is back to showing six hours of movies again, that is lazy scheduling.”

Apparently Deutschland '83 was always intended to be a trilogy, so "cashing in" on Series 1 wouldn't really be accurate. We were left with loads of loose ends at the end of the last episode.

83, 86, 89 would make sense (with the wall coming down on 9/11/89).

I believe that was / is the plan (hopefully it comes to pass).

I agree.....watching Martin, with graying temples, a bier gut and a receding hairline pushing a baby-buggy around East Berlin would diminish the original

UFA, RTL, and Fremantle Media will decide about a second series of Deutschland 83 in late March,. That's what UFA CEO Nico Hofmann has said in an interview.

If money's the issue you would think C4 would stick a few quid in, what with it being the highest rated foreign language drama series ever on UK TV. BBC4 co-produced subsequent series of Spiral and that rated nowhere near D83 and they've got buttons as a budget by comparison with C4.

It'd be a travesty if this was left at just one series.

The mini series about Hitler by the same production company sounds very interesting (and something that would sell abroad just like Deutschland '83). Fingers crossed both series get the go ahead.

I just watched this - I recorded it when it was on, I watched all episodes in a week, it was bloody brilliant.

Me too! I'm sure C4 would be interested again, it got really good ratings for a foreign language drama and created quite a buzz.

Confirmation that Deutschland 86 will be produced by Amazon ...

Set in Africa? Not sure about that.

Anyway, hope Channel 4 pick it up, if they've got any money left after spending it all on that big empty tent.

I'd be quite surprised if Amazon in the UK didn't have first dibs on this - after all, they get all the US shows Amazon are investing in.

Where does it say it's set in Africa?

Interesting situation, isn't it? You're right, Amazon UK will have first dibs on it that's for sure.

Has there ever been a show that was released on a streaming service and then subsequently broadcast by a traditional broadcaster?

It doesn't. This is what is actually written:
As the title suggests, Deutschland 86 is set three years after season one. East German agent Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), who had been banished to Africa, is recruited by his Stasi agent aunt Lenora (Maria Schrader) to fight for the losing battle to defend Communism abroad. Deutschland 86 is set against the backdrop of real events at the time, when terrorism raged across Western Europe.

Maybe they could incorporate it with Martin baking kuchen and pumpernickel

As far as I can recall, only when there has been a coproduction arrangement in place, a la Ripper Street, where Amazon had the first rights, then the BBC had a terrestrial broadcast.

Good news: http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/c...contentID=2319

"C4 will also air Deutschland 86, as well as make it available via its on-demand service"

Breaking Bad started on c5 for maybe 1 series before being taken up by Netflix. All series were later shown back to back on Spike, a c5 channel.

Breaking Bad is an AMC show. In the UK, the first series premiered on FX (in HD and ad free), it then went to one of Five's channels who I believe showed the first and second before being dropped.

Nice . Even now I'm still surprised how I got into this as it's not my type of drama, the first foreign subtitled one I watched anyhow. Will definitely be viewing the '86.
