I suppose the nervous and shifty behavior is meant to show us his inexperience. Will we find out what happened to the woman or do we just assume he killed her?

The first episode was very promising and I cannot offhand remember the last time we had a drama series from Tyskland/Germany.

There aren't any current Scandinavian dramas on BBC Four but this one looks set to be a good replacement. I take an interest in European history and if anyone's interested in that Cold War period and East Germany, then I really recommend Anna Funder's Stasiland (factual) and The Leipzig Affair by Fiona Rintoul (fiction).

I found this quite good, became attached to Moritz (as he's called) early on.

Yes he's a nervous spy, but I suppose this shows the realism of the situation, he's not going to act a pro when so inexperienced. The saving point for him is that he's young, so people around him may attribute his behaviour to being a young lad and be more inclined to overlook the jitters than say if he were an older serving man. Besides, he'll grow into the false identity sooner than he expects, I'm presuming, one, because he wants to do the job so he can get home, and two, if he doesn't succeed or tries to run again it would not end well for him.

I also wonder the longer he stays in the west the more he'll think he doesn't dislike it, or the people, as much as he originally thinks. Will it be that, walk, eat and sleep with the enemy then fall in love with it at some point too.

This was very good indeed. But I'm amazed at the moronic comments here about 'I won't watch because the language is glutteral' and "subtitles = flop". What stone have these people been living under these last 5 years? Danish and Swedish subtitled dramas have been hits here as I suspect this one will be.

No, you must have missed where the German general mentioned the Soviet Union's targeting of West Germany with SS 20 medium range nukes as a counter to the US placing Pershing and early Cruise intermediate range missile nukes in West Germany.

This series is excellent, always get the impression we are starved of some fantastic German dramas for the absurd reason that broadcasters here still view Germany through the prism of WWII.

"as a counter to"? The SS20s were in place first. So who was doing the "sabre rattling"? ICBMs and submarine launched missiles would hit the US, so the general's point wasn't valid.

It was only OK. Idiot lead character, who I assume will get better and he'll be amazing by the end and everyone will be rooting for him.

The soundtrack was hilarious. The year is in the title, we don't need it rammed down our throats.

Just watched Episode 3 on RTE Player. Brilliant stuff.......the show is getting better and better with each episode (and the music on the soundtrack is fantastic)

Lol visited East Germany about this time while in Berlin and remember the German I spoke and heard. Plus worked for the American army and have passes in my passport to visit every Nato base.
Little note only last week on internet the US let out information on the targets selected during the Cold War . They included 119 targets in East Berlin for nuclear attack. !!!!!!!!!!
But in that era the US had trouble recuiting for the US army after Vietnam and had reduced down the intelligence requirement to enter the army.
I was told this by Americans while working in Germany for the US army that a general had got a driver who had been taking him to visit several bases told his driver to take him back to the base at Frankfurt they had been to the day before.
The driver started reversing up the autobahn.!!!!!
Little note of fact I know that at a RAF base in Germany when checking there stores on the nuclear weapons for the bomber found that one had gone missing.Its presumed stolen by the Russians.
