At the risk of being called a total wimp , has anyone gone on holiday abroad and missed their dog ?

I have a big birthday coming up and we are all going away to the U/S for 5 days .I know I'll miss my little fella and what's worse - I know he'll miss me the friend who was supposed to be coming here to look after him has let us down ,and we are having to use one of those sites where a couple come here to look after him -gulp ! they are all vetted and referenced and everything but I can't help worrying all the same

You don't sound a wimp at all to me!
I hate going away - however tempting the holiday - and leaving my animals behind. I'm sure the couple will be fine and your little dog will be too. Once you are on your way it'll get easier, especially as it's not for long but I always make sure I phone or email and ask how everything is! And just try to concentrate on how happy you'll both be when you come back! Wishing you a lovely birthday holiday - just enjoy!

Thanks Allie .I do feel guilty leaving him but this is the first family holiday in absolutely years .I will just have to trust that this couple will look after him well and try not to fret .I'd rather have left with someone we know but they are all coming with us

I don't think your a wimp at all. I won't go on holiday if it means leaving my dog behind, which means if I do go it's UK holidaying only, as although I could get her a pet passport, I wouldn't want her to be away from me on a plane. I missed my cousin's wedding because I won't leave my dog overnight, I simply don't trust anyone to look after her the way I do (except my family but they'd have been with me). Separation anxiety is meant to be a dog problem but in my case it's the owner's.

Coliiewobbles - My friends brought their dog with us to holiday in Ireland on the ferry. With a pet passport I daresay you could do the same to France, Spain or Holland if you wanted to

I do miss my cat and I feel very guilty if she is left in Cat Prison whilst I go off to enjoy myself. Luckily the last few holidays neighbours have fed her so she can stay at home - she does miss me, but at least she isn't banged up somewhere strange!
