Is this the right place to post Ryder Cup discussion? I'm assuming so as I can't see a separate Ryder Cup thread. Apologies if this is the wrong place for this....

Just been watching a programme on Sky's Ryder Cup channel - How the 1997 Ryder Cup Was Won. Interesting stuff and as I was watching I was also reading online a bit about that cup as well as a few of the previous ones. (I didn't watch golf in those days, the first Ryder Cup I got into was 2010).

One thing I found out that struck me was that previous to 1997, Bernard Gallacher had been European captain for three consecutive cups. I just wondered why this was? I thought they mixed the captaincy up a bit and gave it to someone different each time. How come Gallacher had it for three on the trot - especially as he had lost his first two? Were there no "better" candidates for it? Anyone know/remember? Just for my own interest! I'm no expert, obviously!

for a long time the US had a policy of picking different captains every 2 years and no-one ever captaining more than once, the one recent exception had been nicklaus until watson was made captain 2 years ago and they have now scrapped it altogether by going back to davis love III

the UK, subsequently EU team, never had that policy and have had the same captains multiple times. Jacklin captained 4 times in a row before Gallacher.

Cheers for the answer. I get that someone can be captain more than once. But really I suppose I wondered why he was given the captaincy a third time when he'd lost the previous two? Fair enough, it turned out to be the right decision cos he won! I just would have thought that at the time, on paper, it would have looked like he wasn't doing too well with the captaincy and the "smart" decision would have been to give it to someone else. Was no one else in contention?

both the ones he lost were very close and he had also been vice-captain under jacklin for the 3 previous cups where we won twice and tied one, and was quite highly thought of by the powers that be at the time

i cant remember there being much of a call to replace him after the 2 losses and most of the possible alternatives were all still playing at the time and hoping to be in the team rather than captain

Fair enough, that makes sense. Cheers again.

Davis Love has been feeling guilty over not picking Bubba Watson as his final Wildcard pick

So he has made him his fifth Vice Captain for the US team instead

You could not make it up could you

Bit of a cop out decision really.

Either take him as a player, or don't take bit at all.

There will soon be more vica captains than players in the Ryder Cup.

I'm looking forward to seeing how involved Tiger is. He's usually not interested in team stuff but seems to be throwing himself into this.

Really hope Europe STUFF the USA if only to hear what FIGJAM and the Captain have to say THIS TIME following the assassination of the great Tom Watson ( accepting he made mistakes) 2 years ago as Gleneagles

Just noticed Westwood shot 82 round Kingsbarns on Friday. That's pretty horrific round there.

Tyrell Hatton is 5 clear just now in the Dunhill Links Championship. A super talent and a future major winner imo.

Well done to Hatton on his first win a really good player

Well done Hatton - he has ripped St. Andrews to shreds over the weekend ... 16 under par.

You would think he would need to control his temper if he is going to make that next step - I have seen him very down on himself and virtually moan the whole round if things aren't going his way ... but that sort of mindset seems to work for Jordan Spieth. so who know's.

Find it difficult to appreciate Hatton as his on course manners at times are some of the worst I have ever witnessed.

No doubt about it though. If he can keep a lid on things he will be a major force in years to come.
Fantastic Scoring

He's withdrawn.

I think his comeback whenever it starts will be short lived.

What's happened now.

I do think he should probably call it a day to be honest

Any opinions on Russell Knox's choice of partner for the World Cup?

Rather than choosing Martin Laird or Marc Warren who would have been the obvious candidates he selected his mate, a 32 year old who has never been inside the world's top 300 and the most he's ever won at a European Tour event is 7,000 Euro.

Fair enough, he's had a good season on the Challenge Tour but he seems delighted by the fact that even finishing last will still give him his biggest ever payday.

I suspect there will be a few people annoyed with Knox's selection.

Yes I am shocked he is allowed to do that it's a very strange loophole.

The Turkish open next week considering it's a final series event the field is shockingly poor.

Just looks a run of the mill euro tour event field, I know there was the rocket attacks in Antalya recently maybe that's a factor.

This American guy who is in charge of the euro tour states players only have to play in five events outwith majors and wgc events.

This is clearly done to benefit the likes of poulter, Donald and McDowell who no longer guaranteed places in these but I don't think it's helping the tour

I do think this might open the door as Japanese golfers traditionally struggled getting over the line

Keith Pelley is Canadian ...

I read on the BBC that the PGA tour have continued the move into European tour territory with the CJ Cup in South Korea which will be part of a 3 tournament swing in Asia next year for PGA players. This new tournament will have the biggest prize money in golf outwith the majors and WGC events.

Also the PGA are bringing in a rule where members have to play at least 25 events on the PGA tour per season - so they are trying to make it harder for dual tour members ...
