But to stay positive and constructive - as this is an appreciation thread - I loved Gleb's reaction to the joke "underwear calendar model"!


Welcome. I'm sure Gleb would appreciate your middle of the night musings on him! So he's a smoker? I'm disappointed. He has such good skin that I would not have thought him a smoker but there ya go. Quite a few dancers seem to smoke which is strange given you need your lungs working at full capacity and then kill them slowly with ciggies.

I really liked it as a dance--they look great together, I loved the costuming, and there was a lot more dancing than is sometimes the case in the first DWTS weeks (lol, very low expectations for this show). Obviously it wasn't traditional, but DWTS doesn't do the kind of VWs that SCD does (I've never seen anything like the Helen/Aljaz VW, for example, on DWTS). I think they have a really good chance of getting close to the end. Yay, more Gleb!

As to the family situation--I wasn't aware that they weren't in LA with him. His wife seemed to be quite busy in Australia, so maybe it's taking time for her to pull up roots there and move. Gleb gave an interview to a DWTS fan site in which he said that his daughter was about to start school in LA. Sure it could all be PR spin, but I'm inclined to give them a pass for it. I'm like Pretzel--I want him to entertain me and don't care where he chooses to live or work.

They do look together as a couple and hopefully this bodes well for a long stay on DWTS so we get more Gleb.

Its great to see the clip of the dance.Actually he has tried his best to keep us up to date with him .Great they got thru as well.

Elena is supporting him a lot on twitter/facebook .It could be like you say CHOU that it takes time to up sticks .I did read where she says they are packing to leave for the US and Olivia is excited.It does take time to maybe rent out their house and tie up loose ends. And in essence they didn't really know what was going to pan out until recently so maybe she arranged shows in OZ as well.

I think Maggie you said something like Gleb has a habit of moving on after one season.Although that has happened in effect,I am not sure its what he particularly wanted .In the Oz DWTS........he was partnered with a former Miss World but went out in the first round.Maybe they didn't renew his contract as I don't recall any other seasons.

In the US DWTS....he was with Lisa V and that was a mismatch.He was then in the troupe and then that business with the rumours and he hotfooted over to Russia to win Elena back.She had signed up with the Russian show so he did too but he has been quoted as saying that he will not be living in Russia again altho they both seem to be proud to be Russian.And there he was second.

Like I say.....I feel it was a simple case of the DWTS was a better financial option than the SCD one.Its DWTS who have been quoted as saying that they ..DWTS....have given him a package he can't refuse and took into consideration his wife,child,schooling and housing .

Circumstances vary day by day,year by year for anyone.Look at Beckham...Manchester to Madrid to LA.So its not so much his track record...more his choices due to circumstances. I like him a lot and I like his little family too.

Altho I am not looking at Jana or relating to her in anyway as yet...I can see that she is suited to Gleb as a dance partner with her weight/height proportions like Anita and Adelina were.Obviously like and relate to Anita since we saw more of her and can understand her conversation and humour I think Jana is going to be ok hopefully.
Looks as if she wants to add to her bow.Seems to be a country singer.I love country on occasion.....lol......Mom played a lot of Kenny Rogers,Dolly Parton and Bobbie Gentry over the years and gotta say I like it . Really like Rosie don't take your love to town and Jolene.

It's pretty common for dancers to smoke. I think most of the Strictly pros do, in fact there was an article the other day about Daisy in which the writer said Alijaz was outside smoking. Their lives are quite stressful and hectic, the women especially are required to keep slim, and smoking is known to curb hunger.

For starters, that's a waltz? LOL. I really disliked her facial expression and I'm sorry but, WTF was she wearing?? Sorry, I don't wanna be mean, I do have some good things to say -honest, but I find DWTS so gimicky and so far away from what we're used to seeing that it is often jarring to watch. It is so different, perhaps that's it, and I can't say that I haven't enjoyed quite a few of the performances, even the outlandish ones, but mostly it just doesn't seem like the same show to me at all.

I watched a Disney week one and hated it (except for Maksim Chmerkovskiy dressed as Mowgli, but er..that maybe be for other less pure reasons).

Anyway, for the good side. Gleb looks great, and styling aside he and Jana do indeed, as you've all said make a good dancing couple, they look great together, well matched and seem to have a good working relationship, so that bodes well. I don't know of Jana at all, but being a singer can only be good for her musicality and like Melissa I quite like a fair bit of country so I may look out for some of her stuff.

Yes I know and I thought Aljaz smoked because of his skin. I'm shocked that Gleb does though, that's my point. He looks so healthy and says he never drinks alcohol and then ... he smokes ...

My reaction absolutely! I edited my post about it because it was on an appreciation thread but ... my first reaction was linked to nausea!

No, I do see your point. Smokers always look so unhealthy, but Gleb doesn't. Maybe just an occasional social smoker?

I know a lot of Russian men do smoke and I'm sure I've read it somewhere that many pick up the habit while doing national service due to stress and hunger pangs (conscripts aren't fed much apparently). I don't know if Gleb was ever a conscript? I'm not sure how he would have got out of it if he wasn't. Russia's pretty strict about it.

I took his remark about the alcohol more as a joke about how keen he was to celebrate the end of the ordeal! But he may well make it up as he goes along.

It would be interesting to know if he did national service. From the little I've read he has never mentioned it. May be sports people and certain entertainers are exempt -?

Fellow appreciators, I was worried about how you'd react to Gleb on DWTS, but this is a disaster!

You're all right, of course. It is horrible. I started watching it because my mom did, and it has got worse and worse. Tuning into SCD for the first time last year was a revelation, and I probably wouldn't have watched DWTS this year at all if it weren't for Gleb. Believe it or not, DWTS did use to look a lot like SCD (focus on the ballroom/latin aspect, a grand staircase, the same theme music) but over the years they've eliminated it all. To be fair, it's on commercial television and they do 2 series a year, so I guess to keep their ratings up they feel like they have to speed it up and sex it up. The worst part is that they like to focus on the celebs' personal tribulations (dances inspired by bullying, bulimia, or deceased relatives .)

So, in view of all that, I really liked Gleb and Jana's first outing (as a show dance, not as a Viennese Waltz, mind you). And to be honest, did anyone expect Gleb to do an Anton-like Viennese Waltz? I think the producers are probably pushing him and Jana into the sexy slot, but I'm sure the Glebster is fine with putting on a show--he always struck me as someone who loves to dance but who doesn't see himself as bound by ballroom or Latin traditions.

So, my advice: expect a lot of heinous insults to ballroom dancing in the upcoming weeks and try to enjoy the Glebness!

It did indeed used to be exactly the same as Strictly, but with dances that are popular in America like the Mambo and Lambada also included. I used go watch it on Watch when they showed it, and it always filled the void when Strictly was off air quite nicely. But now.....

It is what it is I suppose, but it was much better when it was just Strictly USA.

Hi everyone. There was some speculation about Gleb's wife and why she was still in Australia. Elena is choreographing and dancing in a Ballroom Show near Sydney on October 22nd. I would imagine until that is over she won't be able to join him in LA. She is promoting the show on her twitter page. It looks similar to the one she did in Russia in February.

Funniest and most appropriate description of DWTS I've heard. They do most of the their standard ballroom in American smooth style with much of it out of hold. It makes me sad when I compare to the beautiful ballroom of SCD but I have accepted it as part of how DWTS works.

I don't think he has done it.He says he left Russia at 16(Latvia/Lithuaina) and from 19 he was in New York modelling.He has a big thing for New York.

He met his wife whilst in Russia but they kept in touch while he was in New York and I think Lena said the same.So really has not spent much time in Russia from the last 15 years or so.We don't know but he could very well be a dual US/Russian citizen already.Very surprised if he wasn't actually.

Thanks for that link chou. I liked that routine. Gleb looked delicious. I love those loose black trousers for male dancers. Make their legs look long and define their bottoms. Far better than the naff tapered with pockets trousers used on SCD at the moment.

Oh, don't worry choucroute, I'm well versed in what DWTS is like and I may not like all of it, but I still enjoy it for what it is. And Gleb, bless him didn't eactly stick to the rules on Strictly so I can well imagin that being given a free-er rein on another show will result in even more outlandish dance interpretations so we're expecting it. I never have to 'try' to enjoy the Glebness- I always do


That's intersting because Anita is currently presenting a documentary about New York on BBC2. It's quite interesting. Not sure when it was filmed, maybe earlier this year? I wonder if she asked Gleb for any tips on places to visit etc?
