Justin Bieber could have the top 3 positions in the singles chart.
Sales data is suggesting Justin Bieber could become the first act in chart history to hold the Top 3 slots on the UK Singles chart this week.

As much as this will be considered a massive achievement by UK media, is it really an achievement?
Or is it a default success story as people continue to stream the same songs they already know and like because UK radio stations are so slow when it comes to introducing new music to its listeners and music channels seem reluctant to play lyric videos all day long? What Do You Mean? looked like it was on its last legs about 2 months ago ready to drop out of the top 10. Suddenly it found a whole new wave of popularity. I suspect more people have joined Spotify in the last 2 months...but ultimately these new users are just streaming the same songs as everyone else. I don't see it as an achievement, but more a reflection of the charts going through a transition period where streaming increases, and downloads continue to dwindle in sales. 2016 could be a weird year for UK #1 singles, the polar opposite of what happened in 2014. I wouldn't be at all surprised if 2016 sees the first official UK #1 on just streaming sales - as in it's not available to download anywhere. Now that would be an achievement. A very bizarre achievement at that. |

I wonder how many people would even be aware of it? I haven't seen any music charts since TOTP ended and wouldn't even have a clue where to look.

Streaming has made the singles joke a chart. It's all about the fanbase now sadly.
They should copy Eurovision and have a jury make a percentage of the final chart overall. Bieber would be ranked last with a jury. |

The worst thing about streaming is that as more and more people join Spotify, they all just continue streaming the same songs as everyone else.
It's the only explanation I can think of to explain why What Do You Mean? is going to be back in the top 3 again after two months. It's definitely not a case of the song becoming more popular again, but that more people are listening to the song because they already liked it 4 months ago. If Justin Bieber released three new singles on the same day, and they entered the UK chart at #1, #2 and #3 then I will say it's an achievement. If the UK chart is supposed to represent the most popular songs at the moment then an all Justin Bieber top 3 is a massive failure. Where are Mike Posner, Matt Simons, twenty one pilots, Alan Walker, The Chainsmokers feat. ROZES, Lukas Graham etc...in todays chart? Nowhere to be seen because UK radio stations aren't playing these songs so the general public don't know these songs exist and yet they are already on iTunes and Spotify and I'm sure would be near #1 if they were getting the levels of airplay that Bieber has been getting. The UK chart right now is just a reflection of what radio stations and music channels are playing. Everything else makes up the top 200.

Twenty One Pilots are regularly played after 7pm on Radio 1 and they have made the main playlist before but probably no other station plays them possibly XFM
Two of the singles of the new album nearly went top 40 in iTunes it's streaming that stopped them charting Pretty sure Annie Mac has played most of those artists in the evenings You have to remember that a number 40 now sells as much as a number 10 ten years ago and number 100 is usually more sales than a top 40 hit 10 years ago , you need to think of the chart as more than a top 40 especially as there is only 2-3 entries a week, also sings sell for much longer remember the early 00s where a band like ' Haven' would get a top 40 hit then drop out the next week then be out of the 75 after 3 weeks they probably only sold about 5000 copies and then it would be deleted , now a song can sell for months and years. |
