Lenovo are to phase out the Motorola brand name in 2016. Meanwhile the Nokia brand name is expected to make a return this year under licence.

The good news is:

"The Motorola division is expected to take over the mobile operations of the Chinese manufacturer and develop phones under the Vibe and Moto monikers"

so it's not all doom and gloom, we'll still see Moto E, Moto G 35th generation and Moto X models.

It doesn't matter what they call them, it matters what they "are". And sticking Nokia on a generic phone is only likely to appeal to old people who, for some strange reason, are nostalgic about the brand. Lets hope Nokia doesn't become a Polaroid.

Indeed, for me the good news is that the Motorola engineers/designers seem to be taking the place of Lenovo's mobile phone division so other than the name change hopefully they'll keep churning out some decent products which they've done in the last few years.

Would be a shame if Nokia is just stuck on any old tat, it would be great to see proper Nokia engineered phones with Android on.

With Lenovo still fairly low profile I guess we might well see 'Lenovo Moto' branding in the next Moto release

It is what I fear. People will think they are getting the old Nokia quality. However I suppose we should keep an open mind. The Nokia android tablet was made by Foxconn and they no how to put stuff together. But what about design?

Just from this site Ive heard of some some good Asian brands of Android phone that I would never had heard of otherwise. Im willing to bet that if one of them wanted a slice of the European market and approached Nokia to simply licence the name, Nokia would bite thier hand off.
It would be a good way for that firm to get an easy foothold in Europe, while Nokia get a good cash injection. When the brand deal is up the firm can simply carry on releasing phones under their proper name.

Those with old Nokia phones and originally registered their phones with Nokia website are now having to go through Microsoft since the takeover.

Will the Nokia asha phone owners be autmatically be reregistered back as Nokia customers again? Microsoft don’t seem to care less about the Asha branded phones.

Reason us old farts get misty eyed over Nokia is that back in the day there was nothing to touch them in terms of user engagement. Motorola phones were a joke and the others weren't much better whereas you could pick up a Nokia and use it. Until they embraced Symbian of course. I had an N73 (I think) and although it had a superb camera for the time, I never did work out how to send a text. Well I did but then the next time I would have forgotten again.

Still got my 6310i in case of nuclear attack. It's the only device that will work. I've even got the laptop I used to hook it up to in a layby in South Brent to check my stock positions of a morning. Bluetooth and GPRS. It worked too, over Orange.

The sad thing is that probably 10 or more years later, you couldn't sit in that same layby and do that with Vod or O2.

I did look at david16 post but was unsure if it was sarcastic or serious?! Polaroid stuff is low end tat. Even Blaupunkt is low end tat these days.

The fall of Nokia was pretty swift.

It took a while for everyone to realize just how fundamentally people's concerns would change from hardware to software. I remember having my sony ericsson satio back in 2009 and thinking it was the absolute bees knees in terms of design and hardware functionality. Then it dawned on me that the lack of proper app store meant that it would I wouldn't be able to do 10% of the things that could be done on an iPhone (and later Android).
