For me, the best British band in the last 20 years or so. I haven't always enjoyed everything they've done but for me, they're better than most of the stuff out there today.

What do you think?

I'm a fan. Though teardrop and Angel were used for pretty much every scene of someone having a nervous breakdown on tv for about ten years.

Love them, especially the first album. Safe From Harm is amazing. At their best such an interesting group with some great vocalists.

I'm a fan. Have all there studio albums. Blue Lines is still their best work to date, or so I believe. Shara Nelson's vocals on Unfinished Sympathy and Daydreaming are second to none. She went on to release an album called What Silence Knows in '93 which is also an excellent piece of work.

Didn't notice this thread and have just created a thread on Unfinished Sympathy I agree they are one of the best British bands of all time, funnily enough I've been listening to Blue Lines a lot recently and can't believe it's nearly 25 years old. For me, Shara was the best singer they worked with, it's just a shame she left so early. Unfinished Sympathy is my all time favourite by them, such a stunning track that still makes me emotional every time. Don't know how it didn't do better than #13 in the charts.

The BBC made them shorten there name to just 'massive' when they originally released Unfinished Sympathy, because of the Gulf War!..they changed it back again after a few months. They also made Bomb the Bass change his name and he flopped.
I think i read somewhere recently that Tricky was going to be rejoining for the next album and that they were also going to be working with Run the jewels. cool combination.

I agree with the love for Shara Nelson. Such a haunting voice. What Silence Knows is a beautiful album.

They were flawless from Blue Lines up to and including Mezzanine. With the odd few songs like I Against I, What Your Soul Sings and Paradise Circus they've been shit ever since. I honestly believe that the more Robert Del Naja had control of Massive Attack the worst they have been.

I like a lot of their stuff but find them hit and miss. One song of theirs I'll say 'wow this is fantastic' and then randomly pick another song and think it sounds like a mess.
That's the cycle, their songs I do like though - I think are 5 stars.

I have a tape of their live concert at the Albert Hall which was broadcast on Radio 1, it's one of my favourite live performances from anybody. I've only got Mezzanine on CD.

Thanks for the kind offer, I already converted it when I chucked out all my tapes years ago. I still say 'tape' if it started off on tape.

Wow what'll be cool, Tricky's a legend as well.

I'm surprised by the negative feedback that Heligoland has received. It's no Mezzanine, but it's a very solid album none the less.

I'm a big fan of their work. I have several albums including Blue Lines, Collected, Mezzanine, and Heligoland, plus the Splitting the Atom EP.

They've worked with some wonderful artists such as Liz Frazer, Tracey Thorn, Tricky, Portishead etc. I have no idea why Heligoland received mixed reviews. I like it, as its a bit different.

Liked stuff from their first 3 albums but it's a bit of a case of extremes for me. Their 3rd album for example (Mezzanine) had 2 massive tracks, Angel & Teardrop, but the rest were just filler material as far as I'm concerned. This was pretty much the same with their first 2 albums, mostly mediocre with 2 or 3 epic tracks.

By the way, has anyone listened to the dub remix of Protection by the Mad Professor called No Protection? This is Radiation Ruling the Nation (based on "Protection") from that album.

It's a real shame Shara never experienced the huge success she deserved as a solo artist in the UK, and also that she has faded from the spotlight for so long; obviously there was the situation with Pete Tong a couple of years back when she was clearly unwell, and I really hope she's made a recovery as she really is immensely talented.

Going to see them a week on Saturday. Cannot wait.

Unfinished Sympathy aside, my favourite track is Angel.

Thought this thread deserved bumping up because Unfinished Sympathy was first released 25 years ago today

Teardrop is best known in the US as the theme song for House.

(Outside the US they used the ending credits theme for the titles instead due to copyright)

I haven't listened to anything since 100th Window (if that was what it was called - didn't listen to that much either, though I saw them three times on that tour and they only played the three stronger tracks off it luckily - except once when they played four and for it dropped...Safe From Harm ) and a few times since. Anyway I agree with every point.

Knowles was a key member of the band imo and they weren't the same after he left.

I love protection ft. Tracy thorn.... so dreamy and otherworldly with a massive slow bassline
Also check out the Brian Eno remix...spine tingling!

Great album! Haven't listened to my Japanese complete singles collection (the first three albums) for years but I believe he remixed various other tracks as B-sides to singles. <edit> Looks like he had mixes on all four Mezzanine singles.
