Isn't it about time that we had a new section exclusively for chart music (perhaps as a sub-section of Showbiz), so that the music forum isn't cluttered with manufactured R&B clones, boy bands and press releases from PR companies?

I thought this forum was mostly about chart music, anything else quickly bleeds off the first page.
This forum's a general music forum, which means threads can be about any kind of music. It just happens that the majority of posters are interested in chart music as the main website focuses on it. If you want to talk about other music I'm sure there are more specialist music forums out there.
dvdforums (or whatever they are called atm) have a music forum that may cater more specifically to the OP's needs. The beauty of the internet is if you aren't 'feeling' a site it's pretty easy to move on....

No. Just because you personally don't like specific genres doesn't mean that they should be farmed off in to new sections.

I don't find it a problem, there's lots of topics I don't give the time of day, it's easy enough to just scroll down. But often people are starting new threads on the same artist.

This. Otherwise we could have 20 or 30 subsections. Pointless.
I don't think we need a new section. Better to keep everything on the main thread, so there isn't too much endless chart music elsewhere. Music diversity is preferable to having good taste hidden away from drivel. So let's celebrate music diversity.

Sub section of Showbiz? SHOWBIZ? How shady do you want to be?
The answer is no darling, you're in a minority. Snore off to somewhere else.

Sub section of Showbiz because that's where many of these acts belong. People are more interested in what they've been wearing than in the electronically-manufactured commodities that have been produced under their names.
Music is a very broad spectrum but I'm not sure how many posts subforums (classical, jazz, rock, country, folk, world music...you name them) would get.
The music forum is fairly slow moving as compared to other forums on DS, and compared to other music forums of other websites. There's still threads from two days ago on the front page. If the majority is about chart music, then genre-specific sub forums would be bare bones and pointless.
There are plenty of alt music forums to move to if DS isn't for you, OP. Though I imagine this thread was created purely to get the dig in about creating a subforum in showbiz for chart music - which is fairly petulant
I'm not interested at all in chart music but I don't think there's much point hiving off other genres to sub forums
We have had threads on blues, jazz, classical etc in the past and they sometimes last a few days and get a couple of pages before disappearing.......but what can you do ?
You can't force people to post if they're not interested and a genre sub-forum would be a tumbleweed stage.
I suppose one compromise could be to use the Appreciation sub-forum to have generic genre threads like Classical Appreciation or Jazz Appreciation......that kind of thing
I don't think it's a bad idea really. The more general threads (for e.g. what's your favourite album/ song etc) could sit in the original/existing music section thus there would be threads.

That must be some sort of record for DS, Post #16 before "music snob" appears.....
To an extent I understand exactly what the OP means.
The principle reason I use the music forum on here is simply because I'm a DS member and it is here, but it certainly wouldn't be my my first choice for discussion about 90% of the music I listen to. There are many better forums for that.

It is music snobbery though. Cant think of a better phrase.
Wouldn't mind a section for 'Chart Information' or something like that where people who are interested in sales, popularity and general chart stuff can post their stats, figures & predictions etc.
Don't think we need different forums for genres though.
It's not music snobbery to dislike a music forum that is dominated by ephemeral, manufactured bands and singers, who are really just fronts for a computer program. I would have felt just the same about all the dreaded Chinn-Chapman releases of the 1970s, which were really just nursery rhymes with a glossy production.
Oh, okay. Hands up – I am a music snob
But I still resent this section being occupied mainly by what are blatantly adverts for latest singles, which are almost certainly being plugged on here by people from the record labels.
its only dominated by chart acts because others dont often start a thread for 'non chart artists'. when threads are started for 'non chart (current chart) material they get good responses.
