Couldn't find any threads on this French series so I thought I'd create one. Did anyone else watch the first two episodes on More 4 last night? Entertaining enough start, a few familiar faces, and lots of typical French film noir style cynicism about politicians and the manipulations of their PR people. Looked good, will be watching next week.

Yep, I watched it, very enjoyable.

Though as far as the subtitles go, I can't help thinking that 'political coverup' would have been a better translation than 'state falsehood' which is not an expression I've ever heard anyone use!

Spin/Spiral....C4 trying to notionally link it to BBC4's hit show, what with Fitoussi as one of the leads? I wonder if the other lead's resemblance to Nixon is just coincidence?

As I said on another thread, great start but they really should think about continuing with the double-bills instead of single eps and FGS reduce the bloody ads!

Enjoyable, and having the main rivalry between two spin doctors is a nice twist. Not as sharp as Borgen, though, and the female characters are noticeably less well-written than Borgen's.

The Men In The Shadows sounds better than Spin through; more dramatic.

Shadow Men would be even better.

Spin is just banal.

I did think about watching it, but then I got trumped by Mr Alley wanting to watch Super Hauliers or some such on Quest (have to admit I also found it strangely fascinating viewing.....).

I'll try to catch up with Spin at some point though.

It looks gripping; I have it recorded and am waiting for an evening on my own to settle in and enjoy at leisure.

Gregory Fitoussi is SO PRETTY.

I have nothing more cerebral to add.

Completely agree, and it sits better with Simon's comment to Ludovic when he saw that he had put himself in the background of the picture of Deleurve and the Russian. Also when he put himself into the shadows during the photo shoot in the cemetery.

A good start, though I too would prefer double bills.

I'll wager similar posts have turned up on the threads for Spiral & Mr Selfridge!

Hasn't part two just finished on More4 after part 1 last Friday?

Aren't they using that phrase because the Prime Minister is lying by claiming the security situation is worse than it really is and blaming immigrants so he can use his control of government surveillance machine and emergency powers to scare people into voting for him?

The Men In The Shadows sounds better than Spin through; more dramatic.
Agreed.

True, though it could be open to misinterpretation as a drama about stalkers

I think it's great viewing - watched the first three episodes in a row earlier this week but have not seen tonight's yet.

I think that anybody who enjoyed Borgen (and Spiral) would enjoy this programme.

But why call it bloody 'Spin' and not 'The Men in the Shadows' More 4?

It is a bit bloody obvious from the titles at the beginning - and I can't even speak French.

I prefer 'The Men in the shadows' translation. Sound more French, lol, than 'Spin' which sounds like Tony Blair has come back to haunt us . The actor who plays the French PM does an excellent job. The character is one miserable git and well creepy with it

It started with a double bill, so four episodes but this is only the third week.

That may be a cultural thing you're reacting to - I think France is still more patriarchal than Denmark (perhaps always was) hence the difference in portrayal of successful women.

I get what everyone is saying about the translation of Les hommes de l'ombre but Kapita and Desmeuze aren't that shadowy to me - though some of their mates are... like the fixer guy in the PM's gang. I think the French title just sounds more glamorous than... Spin. And re Tony Blair... did you see the Tony Blair biography displayed prominently in one of the bookcases last week?

Anyway: I don't think it's totally about spin either - it's more about this State Falsehood - which also seems poorly translated to me - but I suppose state-sanctioned coverup is no better. Is that the spin, though - the PM spinning lone, mentally unstable, despairing suicide bomber vs the more electorally useful al-Qaeda?

I think some of the translation has been a bit suspect. I can't catch everything that is said but I sometimes get a different impression from the spoken dialogue compared to the sub-titles.

The PM reminds me somewhat of Mitterand though I wonder if we're seeing what life with Dominique Strauss-Khan could have been like.

Cultural note: if anyone is wondering why Kapita was given a car for his birthday when he doesn't have a licence, in France there are speed-limited (30mph) vehicles - sans permis / without licence - which people who've never passed their test or had their licence taken away can legally drive. I cannot believe a super-cool spin doctor would ever be seen driving one, though. But it made me laugh.

Funnily enough I did indeed wonder that and came on here specifically to see if anyone had offered an explanation!!

Thank you
