I'm about to get a new mobile phone from my employer. I have a personal phone too, but I'd rather only carry one around with me. I do want to keep my personal mobile number, though.

My idea is to get a sim only plan for my personal phone number, and setup call forwarding to the work phone number.

Would that work? Would there be some problems? (e.g. can you get SMS forwarded as well as calls ...)

What's the cheapest way to do this?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I never found a way to forward text messages so I got a dual SIM phone so I could have both SIMs in one phone and have the best of both worlds.

My EE SIM only personal phone is used for call forwarding and I've never been charged, it just comes out of my call allowance, which is unlimited so no problems.

I've just been talking to O2's sales online chat.

They say you *can* forward SMS messages as well as calls. But you can't do either on Pay-As-You-Go. So the cheapest option would be a monthly contract at £9.50.

[update: this turned out to be wrong. Another call agent told me you cannot forward SMS messages on O2.]

Seems a lot to pay for just call forwarding . I don't really need any data included. I just want to keep my personal number, and forward any incoming calls. (Which will only be about 60 mins per month, probably ... as I will call people back from the new phone.)

Thanks again for any suggestions.

I've tried various ways of doing this as I got sick of carrying 2 phones around (person and work) but I couldn't, just got my work one set to divert to my personal one if it's not answered then I don't have to worry about taking my work one every where with me.

The problem I had with call forwarding is that if my personal number is call forwarded to my work phone and I missed a personal call, if I called them back they'd see my work number caller ID which they'd probably ignore and got confusing, same would apply if you could forward an SMS, your reply would be from a different number and the sender would possibly be confused.

Dual sim phone solved all issues in one swoop and gives me coverage options from 2 networks which is handy sometimes. I got a Moto G dual SIM which I recently replaced with a Moto X Play dual sim which is a fabulous mid priced phone with a superb battery.

Interesting idea, thanks. I hadn't thought of that. Are there any Apple phones that will take 2 SIMs? I'm a bit of an iPhone fan, but willing to consider other options.

I see what you mean.

My plan would be to take the *work* phone everywhere, because it will be a flashy new phone! And save me upgrading my old iPhone 4 in the process.

No I don't think there are but there are dual sim adaptors that could be a solution:

It's not ideal, but you can sort of achieve this with the TuGo app (Assuming it's O2)

I'll second that for Moto x play. Got mine from Expansis France but delivered from UK. Now on Marshmallow too.

If the work phone is an iPhone you might be able to do some clever stuff with iMessage.

Just another thought about separating business and personal calls that involves not needing a separate line. Have you tried using do not disturb on the iPhone? Basically you put your business contacts and personal contacts into separate groups. Then you can set your phone to only admit business calls between certain hours, say 9 til 6. I put personal calls onto do not disturb between certain hours too.

It's not for everyone, but this approach stopped me from having to carry 2 phones everywhere i went.

Interesting, I got mine from Amazon France, no sign of Marshmallow yet. Sorry to go off topic.
