Mounting TV on plasterboard wall.

Hi, looking at mounting a Sony 40EX503 on a plasterboard wall. Unfortunately the place we are going to mount it (and we have very little scope) has no convenient studs.

I saw this mount system today, ZML8500-A: Unimax Any Wall TV Mount, and was wondering if anyone had tried it at all. The AVF blurb seems to suggest it is ok for direct mounting on plasterboard. The TV weighs 13.9kg.

Thanks

Read the instructions;

For plasterboard mounting, each of the 2 brackets uses 3 "toggle" fixings which expend behind the plasterboard. In my (quite wide in this area) experience I wouldn't hang a cardboard TV on plasterboard using those fixings - never mind one weighing nearly 30lbs.

No substitute for solid fixings, regardless of bracket, and you need to spread the load widely for a thin plasterboard wall - in my opinion the toggle fixings don't even begin to do that and will almost certainly pull out, it's a matter of how long it takes....

Open up the wall behind TV (you're covering it with a TV anyway) and put some proper solid noggins in to fix to, then re-board. While it's open you can run the wires in too.

Modern flat tvs are very light compared with typical cupboards etc often fixed to plasterboard. You will have no problem.

Just use proper plasterboard fixing - recommend metal ones as very strong. Easy to buy at any diy store.

I can't say I'm very impressed by the look of those - but as long as you're mounting the TV flat a normal bracket fixed with metal plaster board fixings like these:

is perfectly fine, the TV weighs very little, and all the force is downwards.

If you're at all concerned, use the same fixings to mount a piece of 3/4 inch plywood to the wall (a bit smaller than the TV), this spreads the load over a greater area and you can use more fixings. Then use wood screws to fasten the bracket to the plywood.

I've fitted hundreds of TV's on walls - never had a problem.

I've recently used these

The screws supplied are very generous in length (in fact longer than the distance between the walls) so I just cut them down to size. They are single use, of course, because they won't come out again.
