BleedRed

I've just bought an iPad air 2 and when installing hola I realised it is a paid service unlike on android where it is free. Every vpn app I come across are paid services, does anybody know of a free unlimited vpn app?

You'll be lucky if you get any decent VPN's that are free and unlimited on iOS.

I use VPN.sh which I pay £2.50 a year for, and it's worked fine for me so far and works on my iPhone whenever i need it.

OpenVPN is a free app. You'll need to sign up to VPN provider though which won't be free.

Onavo protect.

I've used it every day for over a year without a single issue (there was a few hours of down time once). Not paid a penny. Not inundated with adds. It simply does what it is supposed to do. I use it when streaming via Kodi.

I've tried several paid VPN's and non have been as reliable as Onavo.

Downside is you don't get options server wise. So if you need to select a specific country it will be useless. Although I'm not sure where the server is so worth a go maybe anyway.

I would like to know this as well!

To me VPN means the way to connect to my company network remotely - THIS is built into Android and IOS (and other devices!)

I suspect that THIS use of VPN means connecting to the likes of Netflix in a different country!

Interesting article about privacy, it mentions Onavo. Never knew they were owned by Facebook.

Quote:
“Facebook – Onavo

Facebook bought a VPN app called Onavo in 2013. Why would Facebook buy a VPN app? As reported on All Things D, it gives Facebook insight into app data usage: “The way Onavo’s apps work, it requires basically getting information across all of your smartphone’s actions. So in a nutshell, if Facebook can extend that sort of deep analytics to the billion-plus users on its network, it will give the company a massive amount of insight into how people use their smartphones.”

VPN functionality gives Facebook visibility into the network connection for the entire phone, including URLs and app traffic. Consequently, Facebook can examine user activity for their own purposes. Onavo is one of the more egregious examples of the privacy paradox. Free users are expecting the VPN to protect them, but likely aren’t aware the VPN app’s business model compromises their expectation of privacy.”

Basically it hides your internet usage. No it can't save data.

A number of sites are blocked by virgin media. Using a VPN bypassed this as virgin (or whoever you IPS is) can't see what it is you're doing. They can still see you're using data and how much. Just not what for.

I didn't know Onavo were owned by Facebook either.

It's odd. The Facebook app is awful bloated. Forever running in the background no matter what you do (killing the app doesn't stop it running in the background. Neither does switching off background app refresh). It's a truly awful all.

Onavo is the best VPN I've found. Reason I like it so much is that it stays on in the background. Every paid VPN I tried turns off if not used or left idle. And even ticking 'keep active' doesn't work. With Onavo it does. If it disconnects it will automatically reconnect.

I initially dismissed it because it was free but after months and months of trying paid for ones I thought why not and have used it ever since.

I use it to stream with Kodi so I can watch TV shows at US pace (My Isp is virgin and hey have a lot of Kodi add one blocked) And if I stream a show most VPN's will have disconnected by the end of the show. So I have to leave kodi, switch it back on, go back to kodi and find the show I want etc. Occasionally Kodi will have reloaded so I have to find the correct add-on, select favourite find the show then the series etc etc. I know it's first world problems but it gets annoying.

With Onavo it stays on. So I just move to the next show.

Given that's all I use it for Facebook are welcome to spy as long as they keep allowing access.

Open VPN is good. But I think to get the best service you should go for paid version. I am also using paid VPN on my IOS.
