I know what can be done: I've used recording equipment myself, but we weren't hearing performances which had been doctored in professional studios.

There are amateur videos on YouTube of Megan singing, and she sounds great in those too. People like Darren and Christopher have sung live on stage for years - they wouldn't be getting those jobs if they weren't up to them. Stephanie was declared the winner, so presumably she was close to being as good as them.

They were singing live

I know they get accused of a lot of things like having the word "celeb" attached to them and wondering what "talent" some may have but they were all singing live.
Compression and reverb can be added to live performances as well as pre recorded
