RIP David!”

I agree.

There is a thin line between love and hate and I rather suspect Angie keeping the Bowie name has more to do with a connection rather than making money.
I have read excerpts from her book and she adored him. So the fact he left her and she was then later estranged from her son must of been really hard for her.

I am not overly fond of her in the BB house but it is going to be difficult for her especially knowing what her son is going through. Just a sad story all round and a horrible position to be in.

David Bowie was such a talented man who's amazing music was part of my youth. He will forever live on in his music.

Oh yeah, i forgot Nile Rodgers produced that!
Let's Dance and Modern Love were my favourite tunes of his....also loved Young Americans. I preferred the Soulful influenced songs best.

Oh for goodness sake! What is wrong with some people. I divorced my ex husband over 30 years ago but still would be shocked and sad to hear of his death (even though he was a first class git!) R.I.P. David, you were a gift to the world of music and can never be replaced.

We must move in a different universe. MJ was just a follow on from what had gone before, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, he promoted it far better and showed how to commercialise more but he was never innovative in his music style. He was largely derided before his death immortalised him.

Bowie changed the landscape from the hippy 60's into the new wave movements of the 70s and new romantics of the 80's.

Not belittling Jackson as an artist but can't think of anyway he reinvented the style of music

A certain genre that all sounds very similar....DB would have influenced many different styles.

The practice of women keeping their own name is surprisingly recent. I am not saying that there are no historic examples of women not choosing to use their husband's name but until recently it would have been considered unusual.

In the 70's when a woman married she was expected to give up her father's name and take her husband's name. That then became her name, it wasn't really a choice it was just what happened under the social mores of that time.

Even as recently as the 80's women were still seen as an adjunct to men. I recall a colleague who divorced in the 80's and her bank wouldn't give her a mortgage to buy her husband's half of their house. The bank manager said "What is an unsupported woman doing applying for a mortgage anyway?" She did find a more enlightedned bank. Even that recently a wife's earnings were not considered when assessing a mortgage application.

Its easy to forget how much things have changed in such a short time. Although weirdly it is equally strange how slowly social mores change.

Actually David Bowie came second in NME's 100 most influential artists

Younger people remember Michael Jackson & may not have even heard of Bowie so that is why people are coming out with 'he's no MJ'. Bowie is indeed a legend. He was completely unique. Don't get into a 'ping pong ball game' with who was better! They both brought their own style and talent... It is very sad.

I think you need to take what the fanatical fans say with pinch of salt. Ie I didn't miss him at the divorce but the job becomes slagging off rather than someone saying quite reasonallbly that they had fallen out of love by the time they split. I think they can't understand that an excuse or husband has a different perspective (and a truer one, although biased in a different way) than someone's whose contact us via media and fanzines.

Gary Numan was inspired by Bowie music. Loads of other bands in the 80's.

I so agree with you, love Jackson but Bowie was a one of a kind never to be seen again.

Sad news for the music world (and its fans) as he was such an iconic figure for that industry, and obv even sadder for his loved ones.

I presume Angie will leave the house once told. Despite being his ex, she loved the man at one point (he presumably her too to some degree) and they share a son (be it one that sadly for angie has no relationship with). But she would prob feel a need to grieve to some degree, despite any post relationship issues.

Whatever she decides to do, stay or go, is down to her and making judgements in advance about eg. how she'll use it for gain shows a distinct lack of basic compassion imo.”

My compassion rests solely with his wife, son and close family and friends. Not with someone who hasn't been a part of his life for decades.

NME is a parochial British pop mag hardly an indicato of global fame or influence.

Ah yes, bit of a sore point! Bowie said some not very nice things about Numan, but years later he (Bowie) kind of said he'd been wrong. I think Gary forgave him.

Its a bit like last night's "who's granddad is deader" competition. Bowie's skill and contribution live through his back catalogue and pecking orders are largely unimportant.

Exactly. A great man has died. It's not a bloody competition!

R.I.P David.

It's very telling that a few people on here are using this as merely a weapon to beat Angie with. Some people should be ashamed.

In my opinion, Angie Bowie is deserving of sympathy too. It must be agonising to know that your child is grieving and be powerless to help.

Loads of people were inspired and influenced by Bowie, and without him and his music you would not have half the amount of people and bands that have come to the fore over the years, just have a look at all the tributes that are coming in and will continue to come in from famous people, there will also be Bowie tribute shows on TV over the coming weeks I'm sure, I've just got over the shock its took me three and a half hours.

Have to agree... Angie seems to have chosen her own path in life and forgot she had a son..... I dont see why she should be out of the house or paying her respects.. they hadnt spoken for forty years it seems.
