Julian, even a plastic, insincere 'RIP' and emoji doesn't excuse this post. If you knew anything about responsible journalism you'd know it's about accuracy, not speed. A story like this had to be verified first, although some always think they're above that kind of inconvenience. As they say of certain news sources "Never wrong for long".
Anyway, this is about the grief at the loss of a great person who gave pleasure to millions, and a family in grief, not about juvenile, petty comments about media response times. He was my favourite singer, bar none - an important part of my life for over 40 years and it hurts, badly. Despite all the music I have to cope with the fact that there will be no more new delights and challenges. No doubt Julian one day you'll find out for yourself, sadly. |

Bowie currently has 58 songs charting on the iTunes top 200. Over a quarter of the chart!

My first awareness of David Bowie came through the medium of film rather than music - his astounding and memorable role in the quirky Jim Henson film Labyrinth was a staple of my childhood in the later Nineties. It would later inspire me to check out his music, which was astounding, memorable and quirky just like what I'd seen from him before.
Bowie lived and grew up in my hometown, and many of my friends all like to take pride in that fact - not because it says anything about the town, but because having a link to this remarkable man in any way is amazing. He brought immense pleasure and hours of great listening to millions, and whilst I've still yet to hear all of his albums, my listening to Blackstar today was made all the more poignant. The final song on the album, and in that respect his last song - I Can't Give Everything Away - was my favourite of the seven-track set, and felt both new and nostalgic all at once. And as someone on Facebook said to me earlier today, If you're ever sad, just remember the world is 4.53 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie. ★ |

Didn't expect this, a very sad day indeed.
A year or two ago I was at the V&A Bowie exhibition with my mate, I loved seeing his outfits and handwritten lyrics. Well worth the money. At least we have his music still, I wish I could leave something so fantastically creative when I leave this earth. R.I.P Bowie |

I was completely shocked this morning when I saw on TV that David Bowie had died after battling cancer for 18 months.
![]() What a truly inspirational individual David was, and will no doubt forever remain a massive influence on music. His legacy continues, it will never end. Today, three years ago, David Bowie was #1 on iTunes when he released Where Are We Now? completely out of the blue. I was listening to the song earlier and it just made me feel so sombre. Even back in 2013 I felt a genuine emotion in that song, and it has only been emphasised more today. R.I.P. David Bowie

He was before my time so it's only now where I've truly realised just how much of an influence he had on music and pop culture today. My first proper comprehension of who David Bowie was came with the BBC series 'Life on Mars' which I didn't realise until it ended that it was a reference to the classic song. The show ended with the actual song which stayed with me. And there are the other classics like Changes and of course Space Oddity which have become ingrained in British pop culture which I took for granted because they're played so often. So yeah, sad to hear of his passing

When I heard the news yesterday, I was genuinely shocked. But what an amazing life he had and gave so much pleasure to his fans. RIP David.

Here's a beautiful recital of Life On Mars by the organist, Chris Nickol, on the 115 year old organ at Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow.

Is it just me, in all the tv and radio coverage I've seen and heard I've not seen one mention of The Laughing Gnome.

This came as a shock, as he had only just been in the news with his birthday on Friday and his new album. I already knew that I would like some of my favourite songs of his, such as Boys Keep Swinging and Fashion, for the rest if my life. Other songs of his such as Ashes to Ashes and Let's Dance will always be classics.

Don't know if its been posted but this brought tears to my eyes.
Organ Scholar at St Albans Cathedral decided to play Life on Mars on Monday as a tribute. It has rightly gone viral. Beautiful ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TncxHFmDEyM |

I went to town last Friday to buy Blackstar, and spent last weekend listening to it. It's brilliant by the way. Then to be woken up at the back of 7 on Monday morning to be told he was gone! My first response was '**** off, he only had an album out the other day'
I then spent two hours under a quilt tent trying not to cry and listening to his records. Space Odity was one of the first songs I ever remember hearing. I used to go to sleep to a tape of 'Stars on 45's' and that was on it. I remember being about 4 and the video for Ashes scaring the Beejesus out of me. And then, when I was about 13 starting to buy all his records. I think what I'm beating around the bush about saying is, I bloody loved Bowie, and I will miss him terribly. He was one cool cat. Although when I was told he was dead, for some reason I was reminded of this quote from Cleopatra, which I have paraphrased slightly. "Is that how one says it? As simply as that. "David Bowie is dead. Bowie is dead." "The soup is hot; the soup is cold." "Bowie is living; Bowie is dead." Shake with terror when such words pass your lips, for fear they be untrue and Bowie'd cut out your tongue for the lie! And if true, for your lifetime boast that you were honored to speak his name even in death. The dying of such a man, must be shouted, screamed! It must echo back from the corners of the universe. "Bowie is dead! David Bowie lives no more!" |

For Bowie fans, an 1 hour biopic of David Bowie, mostly told in his own words and featuring many rare interviews with him during the span of his long career on BBC R4, 30th Jan at 20:00.

I still haven't seen Lazarus since he passed away. To me it's like twisting a knife in the wound.
Lady Gaga is doing the tribute to him at the grammy's, i'm not sure how I feel about that. I think she will do a good job, she is a better singer than she gets credit for. I can't help but think there are more appropriate artists out there, ones that actually worked with him. If they wanted a current artist, why not Arcade Fire or Trent Reznor? I hope the Brits gather his contemporaries and at least involve Brian Eno, but it will probably be Paloma Faith. |

I'm looking forward to listening to Hours... next. The compilation album, "Nothing has changed...." (a line from one of his songs on Heathen) is excellent too, starting from his most recent album and tracking back to his earliest. It includes tracks from the unreleased Toys. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothin...Changed_(album) |
